Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani has decided not to run for governor next year - but will run for U.S. Senate instead, sources told the Daily News.
A source familiar with Giuliani's thinking said the failed presidential candidate has been telling people he plans to run against Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in 2010 to fill out the remaining two years of Hillary Clinton's term.
If elected, the source said, he could use that as a stepping stone to run for President in 2012 - rather than run for re-election to the Senate.
A Giuliani spokeswoman downplayed the reports. "Rudy has a history of making up his own mind and has no problem speaking it," she said. "When Mayor Giuliani makes a decision about serving in public office, he will inform New Yorkers on his own."
His absence from the governor's race would be a boon -- and a bow -- to Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who is considering a run for the office.
Gov. Paterson, who trails Cuomo by up to points in a hypothetical matchup in some polls, insists he is running, even though the White House has pointedly told him President Obama would "prefer" he didn't.
Former Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari, a close Giuliani pal, said the former mayor had been privately sharing doubts with him for months about running for governor.

Ummm, sorry. Hoffman needs to demonstate he can win in merely a congressional district before he runs statewide.
I like and support Hoffman, but I hate to break it to you, Hoffman wouldn’t come within 40 pts of defeating Gillibrand.
Go Rudi, a hell of a lot better for NY than Hill or her stepsister!
I’m not 100% in agreement on everything, either, but I think he’d be very good on certain extremely important issues.
He’s not pro-life, unfortunately, although he used to be (I always attributed his liberal turn to the dreadful Donna Hanover, the TV newscaster-wife that he ditched after she did everything possible to sabotage his mayoral race).
I think he would be great as senator, he is fiscally conservative and loves this country... some people would people prefer the democrats stay in charge of congress and senate? Rudy would be a great senator and a huge foil to loud mouth Schumer...

Folks, please, we don’t need more McCains, Snowes, Grahams, and Collins. Have we learned NOTHING from watching what has taken place over the last decade?
We keep running RINOs, and then wonder why nobody has a fundamental understanding of Conservatism.
Wake up! It’s like banging your head on a wall sometimes. We need Conservatism to flourish, and what we get is people just thrilled to run cover for a guy like this to take one of our slots in the Senate.

Pataki is too wishy-washy... reminds me too much of Frist... Rudy isn’t afraid to stand his ground and will be a player from day one...
Well, Rudy is the proverbial mixed-bag. Ya casts yer vote and ya takes yer chances I guess.
I'd pick Rudy over a *lot* of other people though. If his pro-abortion stance is based on the fact that is actually is the law of the land that's hard to argue against even if (like me) I'd like it to be otherwise.
Strong defense goes a long way with me, too.
Rudy is not a liberal... he may not meet your criteria for God, but he is a libertarian-leaning Republican who happens to love this country... of course in your world we are better off with the current mix in congress than elect Rudy who you hate.

Rudy would be a good Senator for NY, wouldn’t like to see him as President though.
Is George Pataki still running for U.S. Senate, too? A primary between Rudy Giuliani and George Pataki will probably end up damaging the GOP Primary winner, prior to the general election, and this is my main concern about this political race.
Some people here are going to believe what they want to believe about Rudy and continue to insist on total purity in states where there isn’t a chance in hell of getting purity...
The facts speak for themselves. If you're going to stay on this forum, I'd get better informed. FR's opinion of Giuliani goes way beyond feelings and emotions. It goes to the heart of liberalism and social policy. Rooty's a life long liberal --- aka. Rockefeller Republican --- a pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-gay, pro-amnesty, big government liberal. Tough on crime? So is Bloomberg. BFD!
