Climategate: how the MSM reported the greatest scandal in modern science
Telegraph UK ^ | Nov 21, 2009 | James Delingpole

Like the Telegraph’s MPs’ expenses scandal, this is the gift that goes on giving. It won’t, unfortunately, derail Copenhagen (too many vested interests involved) or cause any of our many political parties to start talking sense on “Climate change”. But what it does demonstrate is the growing level of public scepticism towards Al Gore’s Anthropogenic Global Warming theory. That’s why, for example, this story is the single most read item on today’s Telegraph website.

[...]

But in the case of “Climate Change”, the MSM has been caught with its trousers down. The reason it has been so ill-equipped to report on this scandal is because almost all of its Environmental Correspondents and Environmental Editors are parti pris members of the Climate-Fear Promotion lobby. Most of their contacts (and information sources) work for biased lobby groups like Greenpeace and the WWF, or conspicuously pro-AGW government departments and Quangos such as the Carbon Trust. How can they bring themselves to report on skullduggery at Hadley Centre when the scientists involved are the very ones whose work they have done most to champion and whose pro-AGW views they share?

As the story continues to unfold, the biggest losers will be the MSM.

I excerpted the main money-quotes. Read the whole thing.

I hope the story unfolds. So far it has been so scarcely reported few people understand it or take it seriously.

The MSM will never admit it is part of the Hoax. In fact they will continue the Hoax to the bitter end. They are fully indoctrinated, fanatical “Citizens of the World”. Unable to form a logical thought pattern.

Personally I think the "silent majority" wasn't fooled by this crock of crap. I know it probably goes back further than this but I remember back in the 1980s reading about how the seas would rise and WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE because of man-made global warming.

Didn't happen.

Of course the press keeps crying wolf anyway.

The only people who think that man-made global warming is a serious problem are the same people who are arrogant enough to believe that man can have any permanent impact on a planet that can, and has, literally thrown away every member of a long line of dominant life forms over the course of over a billion years.

I would argue that the issue involves complexities that the average MSM writer cannot comprehend. Ignorance allows faith to overcome reason

ME TOO! I was recycling before it was legal LOL! I used to climb fences to deposit my plactics and glass in another town’s recycling plant, because the city of Boston was so slow to provide us with bins. BUT when i am forced to comply with stupid rules for a fake cause, I get very annoyed!

The Greenshirts, the MSM, and the sycophant corporate rent-seekers will close ranks and seek to perpetuate the fraud.

They will never admit the truth, that is not their agenda. Power and wealth and yet more power is their agenda.

The more throats the Greenshirts can step on the better, from their point of view.

Hah. In the 1970’s Time, Newsweak, et al were trumpeting “global cooling”. A new ice age was surely upon us. They haven’t been right on too much since.

Are/did four Americans help scientists in the U.K. break the law by destroying emails require under the U.K. Freedom of Information Law? Here is the sequence of emails: Cast of Caracter: Phil Jones, Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia Michael Mann, Penn State Ray Bradley, U. Mass Caspar Ammann, NCAR Tim Osborn, Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia David Palmer, Climatic Research Unit, University of East Anglia Gene Wahl, NOAA From: Phil Jones To: "Michael E. Mann" , "raymond s. bradley" Subject: A couple of things Date: Fri May 9 09:53:41 2008 Cc: "Caspar Ammann" Mike, Ray, Caspar, …… 2. You can delete this attachment if you want. Keep this quiet also, but this is the person who is putting in FOI requests for all emails Keith and Tim have written and received re Ch 6 of AR4. We think we've found a way around this. ……………………………………………… From: Phil Jones To: t.osborn@uea.ac.uk,"Palmer Dave Mr \(LIB\)" Subject: Re: FW: Your Ref: FOI_08-23 - IPCC, 2007 WGI Chapter 6 Assessment Process [FOI_08-23] Date: Wed, 28 May 2008 17:13:35 +0100 Cc: "Briffa Keith Prof \" , "Mcgarvie Michael Mr \" Dave, Although requests (1) and (2) are for the IPCC, so irrelevant to UEA, Keith (or you Dave) could say that for (1) Keith didn't get any additional comments in the drafts other than those supplied by IPCC. On (2) Keith should say that he didn't get any papers through the IPCC process.either. I was doing a different chapter from Keith and I didn't get any. What we did get were papers sent to us directly - so not through IPCC, asking us to refer to them in the IPCC chapters. If only Holland knew how the process really worked!! Every faculty member in ENV and all the post docs and most PhDs do, but seemingly not Holland. So the answers to both (1) and (2) should be directed to IPCC, but Keith should say that he didn't get anything extra that wasn't in the IPCC comments. As for (3) Tim has asked Caspar, but Caspar is one of the worse responders to emails known. I doubt either he emailed Keith or Keith emailed him related to IPCC. I think this will be quite easy to respond to once Keith is back. From looking at these questions and the Climate Audit web site, this all relates to two papers in the journal Climatic Change. I know how Keith and Tim got access to these papers and it was nothing to do with IPCC. Cheers Phil ……………………………………………. From: Phil Jones To: "Michael E. Mann" Subject: IPCC & FOI Date: Thu May 29 11:04:11 2008 Mike, Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4? Keith will do likewise. He's not in at the moment - minor family crisis. Can you also email Gene and get him to do the same? I don't have his new email address. We will be getting Caspar to do likewise. I see that CA claim they discovered the 1945 problem in the Nature paper!! Cheers Phil Prof. Phil Jones ………… From: Michael Mann To: Phil Jones Subject: Re: IPCC & FOI Date: Thu, 29 May 2008 08:12:02 -0400 Reply-to: mann@psu.edu Hi Phil, laughable that CA would claim to have discovered the problem. They would have run off to the Wall Street Journal for an exclusive were that to have been true. I'll contact Gene about this ASAP. His new email is: generwahl@yahoo.com talk to you later, mike

“It won’t, unfortunately, derail Copenhagen”

The Copenhagen Treaty is already dead in the water, since China and India are refusing to cooperate. They aren’t stupid. Russia said a while back that it’s energy economy “is carbon based” for the foreseeable future.

There was already considerable skepticism here in the US (most people don’t feel any warming is caused by humans). It would have been political suicide in the long run to enact massive taxes and kill our economy over a non-effect.

The release of this information, which shows:

1) Illegal resistance to FOIA requests
2) Tampering with scientific data to support CAGW
3) Probable destruction of data to prevent peer replication (or not) of results
4) Suppression of scientific data that contradicted their theories
5) Suppression of opposing scientific viewpoints in peer reviewed publications (then claiming that due to few peer reviewed papers being published the other side had no evidence)
6) Guidelines for brainwashing the gullible masses with their viewpoint
7) Probable money laundering

is absolutely enough to show CAGW has been an enormous scam.

It will also doubtless result in a Congressional investigation into similar entities here in the US, the IPCC in particular. I expect Senator Inhofe had a party last night.

Some of the top folks at CRU will very likely never practice science again, and the worst offenders will likely end up in jail.

This is the biggest scientific scandal of all time. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Literally TRILLIONS of dollars, and the entire future of the US economy were on the line.

It doesn’t matter if the big MSM outlets are slow to cover this. It’s gone viral, Fox and Drudge are both carrying it - the cat’s out of the bag!

Victory is at hand! WOOHOO!

Second quote is key. This is how environmental reporters - indeed, reporters in general - work. Get a few key sources, use them for quotes or stories all the time. Result: lazy, biased news reporting.

Racism, Global Warming and Barack Obama’s intelligence are three topics with which no one can expect a civil discussion with me. If you want me to laugh in your face, bring up one of these topics and try to treat it seriously. Frauds, hoaxes, manufactured problems. I’m tired of it all.

I can’t wait to hear Lindsey Graham’s excuse for this. And Gingrich, as well. They’ll probably just brush it off as propaganda, or lies the “deniers” have made up.

I would argue that the issue involves complexities that the average MSM writer cannot comprehend.

Science, business, legislation -- lots of what reporters write about involves issues that reporters know little about. That's how these illegitimate relationships form.

The reporters cannot write intelligently about the issues unless knowledgeable insiders HELP them understand and HELP them write their articles. Check out the scientist/reporter emails in the NY Times thread.

The price for all this help and access, is that the reporter had better report in a way that pleases his "helpers" and sources, or he will find their help cut off. Much of current "reporting" is essentially reformatting of press releases from their sources.
