I have three sons, ages 8, 12, and almost-14. I can picture a bigger, out-of-control, older teen needing tasing, but not a younger child.
I have to laugh at someone calling 911 because her 10yo child is having a tantrum and won’t take a shower. I do believe in a parent taking a physical approach to make a child do something, though, that is, grabbing him by the arm and/or yelling. It’s not necessary to hurt a child; it’s all about facial expression and tone of voice. I’m a small woman, and it works for me.
One son is such a nice kid, you’d never guess how rough he was when he was a younger child. I never had to call 911 over him, though. ;-)
You are making assumptions. The child was laying in a ball on the floor, crying. Read the police report. For that, the mother called the police.
Talk about extreme parenting! Know what I would have done? Nothing. And then gone to bed. When she is dirty enough so the kids are making fun of her in school, she’ll start showering. Face it, skipping a shower is not a life-or-death (or police) matter. Leave the kid on the floor in their little tantrum, turn off the lights and go to bed. Sheesh.
A squirt gun full of ice water worked on one of my kids. I would aim for the face. She got so tired of being rudely surprised that she shaped up in a hurry. It really ticked her off, but I calmly explained that if she insisted on being really rude to me, I was going to be really rude to her.
For this brat, I would have tried the squirt gun, and if getting wet didn’t do it, then throw a couple handfuls of potting soil on her while she is wet. She’ll wash soon enough.
LOLOL! I remember that call! Thanks for the link!
We’ve used the squirt gun of ice water to get our teens out of bed in the morning. Too much water gets the sheets soggy, and that makes more laundry for me ;-).
My mother would have taken an extension cord, belt, bungee cord, or just her fists to me if I had ever, and I mean ever, laid on the floor screaming and kicking.
I’ve noticed in nature you never seen a Lion or Lioness look unsure as to how to discipline their cubs. Pain, it works wonders.
The best way to get kids out of bed is with frozen marbles. They don’t melt, and the kid can’t get away from them as they follow him wherever he moves.
Never tried frozen marbles. Do you drop them down his shirt, like ice cubes?
Just toss them under the top sheet and they will find the kid.... they roll down hill so any dip in the matress they will find. You will only need them once. In fact, just the threat was enough for one kid.
8-)
Heh! I know we’ve got marbles somewhere in here. I find the kitten chasing them around sometimes.
Let me know how they work.
;-)
Plain ice cubes got the boy out of bed around 10:30 this morning.
Exactly.
I’m really floored by the officer’s decision to get involved in a child-discipline situation that did not involve an immediate threat of harm to anyone. Who’d have been hurt if the girl just shrieked until she got tired of it or fell asleep?
Maybe the officer was *involved* with the mom, and she’d have been p.o’d if he didn’t intervene? I can see his using the taser once he’d been kicked in teh underneath, but it never should have come to that.
My views expressed on other threads here are I can not believe the cop was such a moron as to:
1. not leave when he arrived on scene and found not crime had happened nor was happening.
2. tase a 10 year old girl.
3. arrest someone when no crime had happened nor was happening.
4. think the threat of arrest had much meaning to a 10 year old.
Even more shocking is the reaction of many of the people here. It is yet another reminder that FreeRepublic is peopled by lots of statists who just happen to disagree witht he aims of the Dims not statism in general.
People are overwrought because the deterioration of societal discipline has produced some really atrocious behavior in children. In adults, too, but only the religious express much concern about the fall in standards of adults’ behavior!
Your item one is where everything should have stopped. The officer must have been poorly trained or something, and I don’t know *what* was wrong with the mom!
The mom was probably at wits end. I give her a pass pretty much. A kid can get under your skin.
Also the mom is not a legal professional, is not trained in the law, has not been trained to understand that a taser can under certain circumstances kill etc.
I often will give a citizen a pass on things that I will not give the professionals a pass on.
The ultimate outcomes of this are:
1. these idiots are giving a 10 year old a criminal record.
2. her father may get custody of his daughter if he wants.
3. there will likely be civil litigation and a settlement.
Unbelievable. Her mother has the cop try to help her put her young daughter into the shower?! No wonder the child was screaming. This was a small girl, too. Again, I can picture an older, out-of-control teen needing to be tasered, but not a ten-year-old little girl. And all over a shower. Ridiculous.
The shower thing made my hair stand on end. What mother has a cop help her get her daughter into the shower?!
