On this one, I’m siding with the Army. No political speeches on military bases. None.
This is not PC on a military base. It is being handled according to protocol. This has not changed.
They don’t want the troops to hear what her hopes for Afganistan might be in contrast to The One’s dithering.
The Army is just obeying the Commander-in-Chief!!

If Palin can use an Army base for a political speech, so can Biden, Pelosi, et al.
Now, it’s granted that a president’s speech will automatically have political undertones, as it’s impossible not to. But, inviting someone to explicitly make a political speech is another thing.
You’d have to be crazy not to understand where The Army is coming from, even after the Hasan disaster.
Senior officers in major commands are POLITICAL creatures. We saw the same politics as ususual when Zumwalt was CNO ... nothing changes.

Not unusual at all. I was in the Public Affairs field in the AF; civilian PAers are common.

Cause the army can behave and like you point out, Palin is a former Governor of an American state and a VP candidate.
Would the army do the same for, say, a visit from Mitt Romney?

Mitt Romney is no threat to Zero — Palin is.
They are afraid that Sarah will embarrass the military by telling them something like “hey you guys make a great photo op.” /s
I wouldn’t mind if the Army would have asked her to keep her speech within certain parameters, but to simply ban her from speaking to the troops is a political statement of its own. It looks like the Commander and Chief is using his power to control the message that troop receive. Here is a question: If troops are allowed to vote (and of course they need to be allowed to vote)then would they be completely shielded from current political issues?
Now it truly is an Army of One !
Can I tell you how happy I am that my son is no longer in the US Army?

She could go right outside the post gates in Fayetteville and give any speech she wants, but on a military base, it’s a no-go.
Do the same conditions hold for others of similar status??
The truth ... on base or off base, in uniform there IS no freedom of speech. God help a sailor or airman if he voice his views publicly, paticularly in a forum that will reach others. It falls unders UCMJ .... penetration however slight ....
The military individual lives under dicatorship to protect and preserve the rights of Americican’s under the Constitution. It is why the Oath is taken upon enlisting or commisioning and is taken seriously.
I was under the impression that if you were a good Commander-in-Chief you wouldn’t have to tell your soldiers how to act.
