EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A bitter dispute over abortion that prompted Rhode Island's Roman Catholic bishop to ask Rep. Patrick Kennedy not to receive Holy Communion has revealed the depth of the divide among Catholics over how politicians should reconcile their faith with their public duties.

“The US Catholic Bishops have ALLOWED the flock to be divided....”

Fully agree, but it doesn’t start there....it starts at the top. There has been no clear statement of direction from the Holy Father to the Church leaders, essentially allowing individual discretion in how this issue is handled. If a Catholic supports abortion, they have excommunicated themselves. If a priest allows that person to continue to take communion, I believe that priest should no longer be able to be a priest.

Militant

No, the Kennedy report relects a divide between faux Cstholics and their religion.

They consider themselves Catholic and that is all that matters.

Ummmmm...methinks they need to have a conversation with their parish priest. They can consider themselves "Catholic" all they want, but that in and of itself does not make it so.

I was not Catholic for the first 43 years of my life...I wasn't religious at all. 12 years ago, I converted, and spiritually, I still feel like I'm taking baby steps.

In those 12 years, I have learned that there's a whole lot more than just saying "I'm Catholic". For your friends' sake, they need to reconcile themselves to God, and be serious about it.

That was not my statement. It was a statement by Billy Graham.

They have had many, many conversations with their priests all along. The priests have counselled them. They have not denied them sacraments. That is all I am saying.

In context, Billy Graham had been asked a question about the sin of homosexuality. He said there is no degree of sin. He said homosexuality was no greater sin that the sin committed by many daily. That is all I can tell you. You may be able to find it online. I do understand your point. Your argument is not with me but with Graham.

It really is that simple. If you want the church to change, better start looking for another church. I know I’m repeating what others stated but you can’t be a Catholic if you are a democrat because one supports and promotes life and the other supports and promotes death. One worships the father, son and holy ghost and the other worships obama and the state.

Dicey Priests not doing their flock any good.

One reason Priests don't take it upon themselves to deny Holy Communion because they have NO IDEA of WHO went to CONFESSION and changed their hearts and who didn't.

Kennedy has very publicly VOTED FOR ABORTION RIGHTS.

No..not only Catholics. I am Methodist and was taught the same as you. I was shocked also...but I have heard him say it more than once. And I am a huge fan of Graham’s.I feel as tho I just threw him under the bus and am sorry I brought it up. Every time I heard him say it I thought...what? But who knows more...me or him? I will go with Rev Graham.

Obviously something didn’t stick.

Since there is no way that anyone reading your posts can tell whether the fault lies with the priest or the “Catholic” parishioner—or both—then, as a Catholic I say that if these friends continue to believe in abortion, they are NOT Catholic. As for the priest-—who knows what he actually said to them, if they don’t divulge it.

Truth is truth-—and the truth is that they cannot be for abortion and remain Catholic. If they believe otherwise they are being deceived by the Evil One.

I know what you are saying. I can tell you this particular priest, since I have narrowed it down to one person, is very good to her and has been a great comfort to her and he has told her she has been forgiven as all sinners are when they repent. I understand your point about if she still believes in abortion. She herself would never have another one she says. And wishes she never had. But she would not make the choice for anyone else. It has taken her years to come to a peaceful place..or anywhere near a peaceful place and enable her to live with this. I have known her for almost 30 years and I can tell you this weighed heavy on her heart for those years.
