CEDAR RAPIDS — Drivers of hybrid, alternative-fuel or zero-emission vehicles will get the best parking spots in the city’s Fourth Avenue and Third Avenue parking ramps.

The preferential treatment to encourage the use of energy-efficient vehicles likely will be adopted for other downtown parking ramps as well . . . go to:

Why does anyone still shop in cities anymore? Honestly. Even if you do not have a hybrid, you still have to pay to park, dodge parking tickets, pay higher sales taxes and deal with lots of other BS.

Online shopping looks better and better each day.

That’s smart! Leave the gas guzzlers to be the ones circling endlessly looking for a parking spot!

Maybe you should retrofit a Hummer with a diesel-electric powertrain from a freight locomotive. It is, after all, a hybrid system.

After seeing my last Prius with a "Yes We Did" sticker...

One marvels at the thoughtfulness of having them park in clusters.

they might be going to work or a play or court.......for any number of reasons other than shopping. perhaps a tea party has attracted them to down town......in fact I found myself parking in one at a tea party just last summer......hadn’t been in a parking garage in years.

Seems to me that a Hummer would need two of those parking places.

Will they include these? They run on gasoline, but get over 50 mpg.

What about a natural gas vehicle powered by chili and beer produced methane?

As these are public, tax payer funded parking facilities, how does this discrimination pass the Constitutional test of Equal Protection?

In my naiive and wishful thinking, I keep imagining that soon I'll wake up from this nightmare, scraming "noooooooooo" to the top of my lungs, and I'll still be back in a time when America made sense.

I'll get up, start my big V-8 Ford, and drive to my steady, secured job where I have medical coverage that I pay for, and I can utilize my guarantee of free speech and right to religion without frothy-mouthed democrats screaming unfair everytime the TV comes on.

But, that's just a dream...

Thanks for the ping. Although I live in Cedar Rapids, I think the last time I parked in a downtown parking ramp was around 10 years ago when The Doobie Brothers were playing on Mays Island.

So, this is just one more reason to tell the off-grid, free-loving, sandal-wearing, bong-sucking, rarely-bathing, tofu-eating, microbus-coveting, earth-worshipping, whirled peas visualizing, tree-hugging, hookah-toking, hemp-growing, koolaid-swilling, Nader-voting, Lennon-singing, herb-squeezing, ganja-rolling, solar-collecting, foil-ovening, cave-dwelling, peace-signing, backpacking, brokebacking, flag-burning, quiche-gumming, Volvo-loving, hybrid-humping, earth-shoeing, God-hating, gun-grabbing, pony-tailing, thumb-sucking, navel-gazing, Obama-fawning, granola-crunching, earth-first vegan hippie commie deadhead losers on the Cedar Rapids City Council—especially that deer-in-the-headlights moonbat, Tom Podzimek—that I don't plan on spending any discretionary funds in downtown C.R. anytime soon.

How long until someone who can’t afford one of these status symbols sues for discrimination against the poor?

There are lots of other hybrid cars. Mine is a gas/air hybrid!

Make yourself a fancy sticker (Gas/Air or Gas/Oxygen Hybrid) and park it there.

This is great! Puts all the cars that need “keying” in one convenient place.

I would never "key" a car but that's the first thing that crossed my mind too.
