For years, just raising the possibility of a primary challenge against Rep. Charlie Rangel was like a third rail in Harlem politics - touch it at your peril.
But with a flurry of ethics charges and old age bearing down on Rangel, the 79-year-old Harlem legend already has one announced challenger and several others circling around his reelection bid next year.
"After 40 years in office, I just think it is fair to ask the question - what happens after Mr. Rangel?," said Vince Morgan, 40, a former special assistant to the Democrat who is running against his old boss in next year's Democratic primary.
That used to be crazy talk in the 15th District, where Rangel typically faces no primary opponent and routinely romps to victory.
No longer.
In addition to Morgan, Adam Clayton Powell IV - whose father Rangel ousted from the seat in 1970 - has vowed to set up an exploratory committee aimed at taking down the incumbent.
"The bottom line is, change is coming," said Powell, 47, who last ran against Rangel in 1994, garnering a respectable 33% of the vote. But since then, he's faced unsubstantiated charges of rape by two women and was arrested for drunken driving in 2008.
The tough talk underscores what many see as Rangel's sinking stature in his own district and in Washington.
Congressional investigators are probing charges that Rangel got a sweetheart rent deal on four Harlem apartments, used his office to raise money for an academic center named after him and failed to report taxable income from a range of assets - among them a Dominican Republic villa.

This is BS. Rangel could run from beyond the grave and he’d win in a landslide each time. Blame a majority of voters in his district for that type of mentality.
Rangel knows where the bodies are buried.
He will be eased out at the most.
God grief an accused rapist and convicted drunk driver to oust a thief? Can nothing better be produced? Of course Marion Berry got re-elected, what am I thinking.
Blacks in these once untouchable districts are opening their eyes. Increasingly, they realize they’ve been scammed. Things have gotten worse in their communities. There’s only so much any people will accept before they make the change.
That can’t be a picture of the party crashers from last week. She was wearing an Indian sari last week. They’ve crashed other parties according to the news, so this may be another bash.
I will expect the people of Harlem to go jump in the cold Hudson River before they would think of retiring their ol’ charlie.
No, there is no evidence that people in thse rotten boroughs are waking up at all. I haven’t heard of any people like ol’ charlie being defeated. Remember how Jack F. Kemp was always praising charlie and trying to get charlie to say something nice about him.
Good catch. And the dood perp was wearing black that night. Wow, tax-cheat Charlie sure does get around.
It is time black people start dumping people who embarrass them.
