Infanticide [ Baby killing ] occurs among polar bears when they run low on fat reserves and become hungry enough to resort to cannibalism [and murder ]..... Gee, thanks for telling us what infanticide means - you must think everyone is as ignorant as you are...speaking of ignorance, how about looking up the (legal) definition of murder? Animals are by definition incapable of committing murder. And the "idiot journalist of the year" award goes to....

Male lions eat the young too sometimes.
But since Africa isn’t covered in ice, I guess it’s not worth a headline.

M-Y G-O-D!
I learned through this thread you can buy polar bearskins through Canada, let’s encourage that trade.
They are pricey, though. We’d have to time-share laying around on em.

All of the animal shows I have watched say this is a common thing with bears. The female bear will not mate when taking care of cubs.

“I propose that Michael Moore and AlGore go and investigate this phenomenon personally.”
I think we should tar and feather AlGore and his ilk for foisting this ponzi scheme on the world. Then after they are covered in seal tone feathers we can drop them to the polar bears to avoid any more infanticide. AlGore would most likely feed one hungry bruin for a couple of days, and Mikey would satisfy many more.

From the article:
And in the southern Beaufort Sea, where the body condition of polar bears has also declined apparently because of deteriorating ice conditions, there have been four cases of cannibalism by adult male bears in the last few years.
In those four cases, the victims were three adult females and one yearling, according to Stirling.
Really? Okay, let's look at the satellite images, shall we? On the left is a satellite image from Dec. 1, 2007. On the right is an image taken just two days ago:
Do you see that blue part above Alaska on the right side image that is now iced over on the left side image? That is the Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea. Note that the ENTIRE Beaufort Sea is iced over in both photos.
Now, where are those "deteriorating ice conditions?" The polar ice cap is in much better condition today than it was two years ago---so much for all those Al Goracle computer models, eh?
If the rate of cannibalism is directly related to the ice conditions, there should be numerous reports of cannibalism in 2007, and fewer reports of cannibalism in 2009. Of course, you will note that the article states that there have been four cases of cannibalism polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea region
in the last few years. Obviously, they adding together previous years of cannibalism and are just now reporting on it to make it appear to the average reader that conditions are still deteriorating. But, the satellite images tell the true story...Well, at least until NASA and NOAA get around to altering that data, too.
Cheers

Same with lions - they kill the offspring of other males to be able to mate with the female.
Not pretty but it is mother nature!

Errata:
Do you see that blue part above Alaska on the right side image that is now iced over on the left side image?
Should actually read:
Do you see that blue part above Alaska on the left side image that is now iced over on the right side image?
I apologize for letting that one slip by.
Cheers

Disney doesnt rule in real nature............... When I was a kid, I loved the movie Bambi. When I grew up, I saw it again and thought, "WTF? That owl would eat that rabbit in a second!"

Some people, like environmentalists, take anthropomorphism to extremes. I wonder if it’s because they saw too many cartoons as kids?..............

Also true of lions and tigers. The explanation most often given is the one in your quote— the cubs of rival males represent a threat to the dominance of a different male and his progeny. The assumption this is due to “starvation” is a complete fabrication and foolish in the extreme. Even black bears in US Appalachians will do this. People think polar bears are cuddly and cute, which the babies are.. but the adults are carnivores and will kill anything for food, including people.
