The Birther Madness (FreeRepublic mentioned)
The Claremont McKenna College Forum ^ | December 3, 2009 | Charlie Sprague

Posted on 12/03/2009 7:11:22 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The Birther movement is convinced that President Obama is not a natural-born citizen and hence is constitutionally prohibited from being President.

Most Birthers claim that Obama was born in Kenya, while others think his birth occurred in Indonesia. Even though Obama has released a copy of his birth certificate showing that he was born on Oahu, these conspiracy theories continue to animate the fanatical right.

What is most surprising about these conspiracy theories is the number of relatively mainstream people willing to associate themselves with the Birthers or at least recognize the issue as a legitimate controversy. One of CNN’s many reasons for dumping Lou Dobbs was his repeated raising of Birther issues. More predictably, The Birthers have found audiences on conservative talk radio and conservative web sites such as Free Republic and WorldNetDaily. The number of people who have serious doubts that Obama was born in the United States is shockingly high. According to one poll, 28% of Republicans believe Obama was not born in the United States or are unsure. These numbers, however, ignore an important geographic disparity: doubt about Obama’s place of birth is far higher in the South than anywhere else in the country. In the South, only 47% of respondents said they believe Obama was born in the United States, with 30 % unsure and 23% convinced he’s foreign born.

Many Republican politicians find themselves in an uncomfortable position when it comes to Birther conspiracy theories. On the one hand, the Birther movement kills the Republicans’ credibility among the vast majority of the population and Republicans. At the same time, Rep. Mike Castle, a moderate Republican congressman from Delaware, was blindsided at a rally in July when a near-hysterical woman accused him of ignoring the “truth” that Obama was a citizen of Kenya. Wanting to pander to the fringe without becoming entirely discredited by the lunatics, many Republicans have opted to align themselves only tangentially with the Birther movement. For example, Republican congressman of John Campbell of California proposed a bill that would require presidential candidates to prove they are “natural-born citizens.” On MSNBC, Chris Matthews interviewed Campbell and repeatedly asked him if he believed Obama was a natural-born citizen. The extreme evasiveness of Campbell’s answers perfectly demonstrates his “wink-wink” strategy of secretly pandering to fringe elements of the conservative movement without having his reputation sullied by outright association.

As a final note to seniors still seeking employment, the Birthers are willing to throw down cash for investigations of Obama’s past. Neil Sankey, a former member of Scotland Yard, has been hired by Birthers to investigate Obama’s personal history. I know most CMC alums can’t match Sankey’s background, but perhaps “Topics in Forensic Science” has taught some desperate seniors enough to follow in the footsteps of Jonathan Ames.

No one can locate that tape .. supposedly from
the 2nd debate shown on Cspan in 2004.

~~~~~~~~~~
This second corroborative testimony is very detailed, and The Post & Email publishes it without editing.
***
The video I saw on Youtube may or may not have been recorded by C-span. It was a year ago that I viewed it, but the image is still very clear in my mind.
It was definitely from the second debate held on Oct 21, 2004. It did not take place back stage as some have reported. Both candidates were standing on the stage behind their respective podiums. The background was blue.
Actually, when I first saw the Youtube video, my first thought was that the debate was held outside because all you could see beyond the candidates was what looked like a perfectly clear blue sky.
The clip was actually filmed from the side of the stage. Keyes was standing in the foreground behind his podium and Obama was beyond that on the far side of the stage.
Even though they were still at their podiums as they were during the debate, the comment made by Keyes was almost as though it was an ‘aside’, definitely not in response to a question from the panel.
He may have been breaking in at the end of one of Obama’s responses. I really could not say ‘when’ during the debate it occurred. But it was very casual-like.
Whoever filmed the clip was holding the camera low if they were standing on the stage. However they could have been standing off the stage to the side. The camera was situated so that it was in a line that intersected Keyes somewhere between his knees and waist, pointing about 15-30 degrees up and was far enough away to include the stage floor as well as the entirety of the candidates from their feet to well above their heads in the frame.
I know it was the second debate because this is the only debate with this background and candidates standing at podiums. The entire video only lasted 10-15 seconds if that.
The thing I do not remember seeing was any logo, Cspan or ABC 7, which is prominent on every video I have seen of the debates. It might have been there, but I do not remember it. So it might have been a video recorded and posted by a private citizen and not a station segment.
As I said, it was very short.
The entire clip just showed Keyes as he turned his head toward Obama saying, ‘Well, you’re not even a natural born citizen.’ Obama confidently responds, ‘That’s OK, I’m not running for President, I’m only running for the Senate.’
That was the end of the video. Very, very short.
The question is whether C-span has the clip. Cspan may have kept their cameras rolling the whole time regardless of a break in the debate if there was one. I do not know.
Thank you, Starwise!
My question to ET remains unanswered.
It seems to me that Keyes would comment, one way or the other. Either Keyes has a memory of it or he doesn’t.
Isn't there still an ongoing case with Keyes as the plaintiff regarding this? Something about Keyes being harmed in an election because of this issue, therefore being one who has "standing"?
So many suits .....
OK, OK, OK, OK, OK. I'm a nut case. They're right. Zero was born here, no questions asked. He has every right to be President.
So now that I've admitted that he should be President, for life if he wants to be, CAN WE SEE THE ORIGINAL GD BIRTH CERTIFICATE? Does the author mind if we lobby for and pass laws that NO ONE ELSE can be elected President without an available original copy birth certificate, so that the next President isn't subject to this harassment?
Because if the author minds that we lobby for laws that prevent this from happening again, it also proves that HE has doubts about Zero as well. In that case I suggest a big, hot, steaming cup of STFU. Or show us the REAL paper work.
Get real. If I were in Obama's position, I'd start hiding the "real birth certificate" just to be sure that this nonsensical circus continues to damage the opposition.
God has granted him Voltaire's boon -- "In my life, I have prayed but one prayer: 'Oh Lord, make my enemies ridiculous'. And God granted it."
You make a good point, one that has been made by others. Keeping the real BC out of his enemy’s hands when it actually does exist is one way to make them look like buffoons.
OK,OK,OK,OK,OK. I'M A NUT CASE. They're right. Zero was born here, no questions asked. He has every right to be President.
I would like to make two observations here. One is that anyone of the most powerful commentators could easily bring up the subject of the birth certificate. A way to diffuse it, is to do like Bill Cunningham of the Sunday night radio show (Premiere Radio). I hope I have him right.
He said only ten percent of me believes the President was born outside of the United States. Though unspoken this would mean ninety percent of him believes the official line. He has guests such as Jerome Corsi and the Democrat lawyer who has tried to bring it to court. Callers have sounded off, with interuption on his show re the matter.
If the "birthers" are a "lunatic fringe" then the supposition that the President - more likely his cunning advisers, would gain but little. This by waiting the opportune moment to put up the real birth certificate. Fringe is what it says- nobody cares anyway.
It seems from the redoubtable press and their digging into long past records of the previous President, the intonations of a Dan Rather, they are like a deer caught in the headlights.
What is the matter with them? (LOL)
Uh, no, skippy, a single foreign born parent does NOT disqualify you. If you were born on US soil, both parents could be illegal aliens.
As it is I think Zippy WAS born in Mobassa. Now, we know that Kenyan dad is “no help.” Mom WAS a US citizen BUT we know she whelped him at age 18-—and according to the laws at the time she’d have had to live in the US for FIVE years after her 14th brithday in order to pass on “natural born” status to zippy. She was a year short. THAT’S why zippy is ineligible. IF he actually was born here, I don’t know why he’d be spending over a million dollars to hid his LONG form BC.
For citizenship. What you are describing is "native born". For Natural born, your parents must have been citizens, and in most cases, except for children of serving military and diplomats, you must be born in the US.
Where’s Alan Keyes on the issue?
IIRC, there’s a story floating around that mentions a missing tape of a Keyes and Obama’s debate wherein it’s claimed that Obama replied that he wasn’t running for POTUS so it didn’t matter that he wasn’t born in the US.
Keyes has been party to some of the lawsuits challenging Obummer's natrual born citizen status.
Howeer he says he does not recall those remarks
In order to "pass on" citizenship at all. But those are statutory rules, and thus change from time to time. The meaning of the Constitutional term does not change, absent an amendment changing it. It means what it meant when written and ratified. Else why bother with a written constitution at all?
