Rice an unlikely global warming culprit (methane)

LOS BANOS, Philippines (AFP) – Asian rice farmers typically do not fly around the world on holidays or own big-engine cars but scientists say they have an important role to play in helping cut the world's output of greenhouse gases.

While much of the globe's focus in the climate change fight is on the burning of fossil fuels and the logging of rainforests, water-logged rice paddies are also a major source of global warming-causing methane.

>

About 10 percent of the methane comes from rice farming, while other sources include the flatulence of cows and decomposing landfill garbage dumps.

Wassmann said it was essential that rice farmers in Asia and the rest of the world did their bit to tackle climate change, but lumping them in with more obvious, fossil-burning culprits of climate change was wrong.

I was going to say, “You just can’t make this stuff up.” Obviously, though, someone has.

Liberals now want Asians to starve in the name of their disproven anthropogenic global warming theory! They blame everything in the world on human existence... from industrialization to driving cars to producing meat and milk and now rice! These people should hear how ridiculous they sound!

Scientists? Any person who blames the cycles of solar activity on humans is definitely NOT a scientist. That person is mentally handicapped or a blatant liar.

Actually I think these “scientists” ought to look into termites, old-growth forests and littoral mud-flats (i.e, marshes and estuaries) as the terrestrial methane culprits before trying to blame the bacteria in rice fields.

... and then there’s the benthic oceanic sources.

... and what percent of the atmosphere is methane?

.00017% Yep. Roughly two ten-thousandths of 1 percent.

But then again, the author would have to actually READ and be interested in real science to even be aware and cognizant of the ‘truth.’

Geez Edith: I cant eat meat because it produces greenhouse gasses, and now I cant eat rice, My breath contains CO2, and I cant drive because my car pollutes.

I am gonna kill myself and save the world.

Here’s my suggestion:

Outlaw rice (because it harms the environment)
Outlaw beans (same reason — lotsa methane)
Make corn really expensive (gotta have our ethanol)

That way, we can get rid of most of the world’s sub-classes, since those three things make up the bulk of their diet. Problem solved.

Well, a lot of that fertilizer...ever notice those water buffaloes?

In Vietnam there was ground that was concrete-like in the dry season and slime in the rainy season. I figured that ground was 10,000 years worth of cow crap.

Those "littoral mud-flats" are called "wetlands" and have federal protection. Can't be blaming them for any Glo-Bull warming now.

Wiping out mankind is clearly their objective.
  1. Rice farming -> Grain for people
  2. Cows -> Meat and milk for people
  3. Garbage Dumps -> Detritus from people

See if you can locate the common link!

Japanese rice farmers are noted for both tenacity (just ask Narita airport!) and for high intelligence — I believe that Japan is the only country on earth where farmers have their own daily newspaper, the 日本農業新聞; its website is here, and by happenstance, the prize-winning first picture from a photo feature that they are currently running is of rice plants:

The 農業新聞 garnered a prize from a Japanese photo society for this and another picture.

(Yes, I am aware of some weekly and monthly farm publications here in the U.S., such as the various state "Market Bulletins" that are published, but I don't know of any daily broadsheets.)
