Conservatives today have forgotten how desperate we felt after the Goldwater defeat in 1964. While we were gratified in taking over the GOP from the Rockefeller, me-too wing in favor of bold colors, many activists felt we faced a hopeless task. You couldnt go to a conservative gathering without someone handing out brochures about Australia or New Zealand becoming the next hope for freedom-loving people.
At one rally in Orange County a gentleman asked Reagan what would we do if he lost? Reagan without missing a beat said, Ill come back to Orange County and we will secede. That brought thunderous applause -- not unlike what you hear in Texas today. It was many years later before I realized that Reagan was only joking. He was convinced that we would take our country back.

The tea party movement has captured Americas attention, and it isnt going away. There are a few nuts that have attached themselves to the movement, as some did to Reagan also; there are some bad leaders, much as we have had mixed in with good ones in the past. But the heart of the tea party movement is to get America back to the principles that made her great. I think Ronald Reagan would have been a proud tea partier too
This Sal Russo guy sounds like a pretty smart conservative. Unfortunately with most of them you later learn that they have a bust of Stalin or Lenin on display in their office.
Ya think?
The cnn article was posted at Free Republic the other day:
Tea Party Express, Part Three
I drew a mustache on it last time I was there.
Yoko threw a fit.
Let’s vote the liberals out in 2010!
We had better be a hell of a lot more proactive than waiting for November 2010. It will be too late by then.
April 15, 2010. SHUT DOWN THE CORRUPT CITY OF WASHINGTON, DC.
It's your last chance people. No excuses. Be there.
If you mean to say that guys like Russo are also part of the problem, then you are correct.
Remember, Sal Russo ran “the worst campaign in California history” as he was taking millions of dollars from Bill Simon in 2002. Gray Davis was so bad, that Simon only lost by 5% (and likely would have won if Sal’s incompetence didn’t sabotage his own candidate).
We have to be reminded who are the political hacks with their hands in the political “cookie jar”, when they try to get in front of a grassroots movement (and pretend that they led the parade).
Remember the name of Sal Russo, next time you hear that California is going bankrupt.
In the meantime, the tea party movement is a great thing. Hopefully, the grassroots can keep the hacks out of it.
Don’t blame Sal for any of that. It’s the fault of the bozo he hired to handle conservative coalitions.
The central message of the Tea Parties is accountability.
Why should Russo escape responsibility (for the mess that he helped
create in California, while he was stuffing his pockets with millions of dollars)?
Based on his own track record how is Russo different
(from the corrupt political hacks, who are the Tea Parties’ targets)?

Since I work with Sal I can tell you that he’s 100 times better than the fools that were brought in during the General Election who took over the Simon campaign!
