Dems' dreams of a blue West begin to turn red
The Washington Examiner ^ | December 8, 2009 | Byron York

Posted on 12/10/2009 7:06:41 PM PST by Clintonfatigued

According to the conventional wisdom after last year's presidential election, Barack Obama's victory proved that a number of once-reliably red states -- Virginia, North Carolina, and Colorado among them -- were turning blue, perhaps permanently. Even here in Arizona, Obama gave Republican favorite son John McCain a run for his money, and the 2008 election handed a majority of the state's congressional districts to Democrats. The home of Barry Goldwater might not have been truly blue, but it was shading purple.

That was then. Now, with Democrats pushing an agenda of stimulus, cap and trade, and health care reform -- all opposed by majorities of Republicans and independents -- we might be seeing the re-reddening of Arizona. Or, rather, the re-emergence of the state that has always been.

"I think Arizona has always been a state that can go blue for individuals, but fundamentally, in terms of attitudes, it remains a libertarian/conservative state," says Margaret Kenski, owner of Arizona Opinion, a Republican-oriented polling firm.

I think that the ‘Rats victories in the west were more a rejection of the Big Government conservativism of Bush than a trend to the left. The Californians who moved to the Rocky Mountains played a role. But the west tends to be more of a libertarian conservative than a traditional conservative.

...we might be seeing the re-reddening of Arizona.

Thank you Sheriff Arpaio for sending all those 'RAT voters home to their own country.

Sheriff Joe needs to be Gov of AZ or better yet - POTUS. He can arrest that Kenyan illegal alien.

“But the west tends to be more of a libertarian conservative than a traditional conservative.”

Huh? Look at the elected official from CA, OR, and WA:

Governors: One RINO and two Dems
Senators: Six Dems
Representatives: Large majority of Democrats - the wacko type like Waxman, Inslee, Waters, Woolsey.

The west is not even close to libertarian conservative - it is blatantly liberal.

Ditto to what you said! :o)

He's got my vote!!! He's not afraid of liberals. He really enjoys antagonizing them.

I was referring more to the Rocky Mountains than the Pacific Coast, which has trended hard left.

I expect low hanging Democrat fruit in CO to be swept out next year and the GOP should win back the Senate seat held by Ken Salazar now the Interior Secretary.

That is not the west. That is the west coast. By the west, what’s usually inferred is the mountain west:

Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Think the WAC; not the wackos.

The irony is that well before the election any reasonably sensible person already knew what Obama’s agenda would be.

People that had their eyes on clouds of Unicorn dust and their heads up their butts put this doofus in office. If they are now seeing the error of their ways that is an improvement but it may be too little and too late.

I don't know who taught you US geography, but the West (notice the capital "W") includes both the West Coast states and the Mountain West. Most also include Alaska and Hawaii in "the West." You left out Montana, BTW, in your list of Mountain West states.

SPEAKING OF TRENDS NJ is a SOLID Dem state which just elected a Repub handily.

NJ and Va Repub candidates both won in the only two Nov 2009 statewide races. Repubs won Independents by a 2-1 margin, (66%-33% and 60%-30%, respectively). McCain lost Independents in each state to Obama a year earlier.

=========================================

Ohaha has turned toxic---he is frantic---rushing to get money into the hands of ACORN, SEIU, immigrant groups, and others, BEFORE the Nov 2010-12 elections.

Even stupid Dems know that, for them, it's curtains in 2010-12---unless massive voter fraud takes place. They need to buy votes, and are pulling out all the stops to get billions into the hands of their operatives---ACORN, SEIU, immigrant groups, and others.

=============================================

OBAMA'S NEVERENDING SLUSH FUNDS Obama already has a huge slush fund: (a) 80% of the trillion dollar stim is unspent and under his control......that he is using to finance endangered Dem. (b) June 9, 2009 Obama announced, "Several financial institutions are set to pay back $68B to taxpayers." Taxpayers assumed that would be returned to the general funds from whence it had come .......in order to pay down the debt. The truth, however, is that the money returned is finding new life as part of what amounts to a Treasury Dept-controlled slush fund....to finance candidates.

ANOTHER SLUSH FUND The US Senate may break their own rules-----and go against the will of the vast majority of US Citizens----to pass their health care bill.......by using the nuclear option.

Remember that the first four years of ObamaCare is to amass $$billions. Period. Healthcare does not kick in til 2013.

Another gimmick pushes much of the legislation’s costs off the federal budget and onto the private sector by requiring individuals and employers to purchase health insurance....or pay a hefty fine or go to jail (only illegals are exempt from this provision).

In Colorado in particular outgoing Governor Owens may have been as big a drag as Bush.
