Houston, Texas has become the largest city in the United States to elect an openly gay mayor after City Controller Annise Parker was declared the winner of a runoff election tonight. Social conservatives fought her election, funding a campaign aimed at turning out likeminded voters to support her opponent, former city attorney Gene Locke. But Parker's endorsements from labor, police, women's, gay rights and other groups were echoed by the Houston Chronicle, the area's major daily newspaper, and her campaign ran a superior get-out-the-vote effort.

Parker praised the support of the Victory Fund and its donors, who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help fund her campaign. “I am so grateful to the Victory Fund and its supporters for believing in this campaign from the beginning. This race was about the future of Houston, and whether we will face that future proud to be an open, welcoming, and fair-minded city. Tonight Houstonians said yes to a future like that, and I am glad the Victory Fund helped make that happen

We gotta pray for Houston. Looks like Joel Osteen and Lakewood Church has got some praying to do also. Maybe there’s redemption in this somewhere, maybe she’ll get saved.

Houston has gone from sticki' to lickin'?

Too bad, it was a nice town. Soon the city will be over run by queers and jihadists.

New Detroit , Texas.

Campaign finance reform that would really work:

Politicians should only be allowed to accept campaign donations from individuals who live within the geographical area the politician will represent.

No out of city, district, state or country funds, as applies. And, only individuals - no companies, corporations or groups of any kind should be allowed to contribute.

Politicians would sober up real fast.

Yeah, what the hell is going on in Texas. The TXGOP needs to stop this now. They need to work much harder and stop playing lip service to conservatives. I guess the same is true all over the place. The GOP either adapts or gets out of the way.

It's interesting how the liberal media is portraying this as some huge, nationwide defeat for social conservatives. When I, a well informed social conservative, only first heard about the race yesterday when Drudge had a blurb about it.
