The push for 350: Contradictions and carbon levels (environmental activist group 350.org)

COPENHAGEN – As police cracked down on climate protesters, church bells tolled 350 times Sunday to impress on the U.N. global warming conference a number that is gaining a following, but is also awash in contradictions.

Conference negotiators, meanwhile, went behind closed doors in talks to pin down an elusive new pact on climate, talks in which the figure 350 looms as a goal for true believers, but one that appears impossible based on progress so far.

It refers to 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the highest concentration that some leading scientists say the world can handle without sparking dangerous climate effects.

"It's the most important number in the world," said Bill McKibben, founder of the environmental activist group 350.org. "It's the line between habitability on this planet and a really, really desolate future."

Not everyone buys into that.

“...350...a number that some leading scientists...”

Interesting use of the words “some” and “leading scientists”.

Translation:
“Some: = < 25% of the climate research crowd (if it’s indeed this much)
“Leading scientist” = a physicist who cannot hold any proper job in physics save for one funded by a government grant, who hides data, and who cannot support his conclusions unless vetted by another government grant physicist.

Oh, and let us remember that the 350 stands for 3.1 one hundredths OF ONE PERCENT.

AND, the CO2 rise occurs AFTER any heat rise.

Inconvenient truths for lib arts majors and journalists.

Hint for climate change researchers: look up.

Oops, 3.5, not 3.1...but what are numbers when we’re dealing with liberals?

Since Co2 is the stuff of life for all carbon life forms on earth, including humans, I wold like proof that the level is now too high and not high enough. If you ask real paleo-climatologists, they say CO2 has been as much as 20x today's level.

And how would we or any one else on earth know ...

The first impression on seeing the massive number of professionally-printed signs and the elaborate costumes is that there is a high degree of organization and some serious money behind the “protestors.”

There you have it. The reason we haven't seen global warming so far is because the CO2 levels haven't gone high enough to trigger it yet--but they're almost there.

Nice backtracking!!!! Nice way to cover the fact that there's no proof that current CO2 levels have any effect!!!

Exactly what are they basing this number on? I want to see all the data. I want to see all the algorithms and analysis. I don't trust any of these guys at all. I didn't trust them before Climategate, and I damn-sure don't trust any of them now.

My suspicion is that 350 was picked first, then justified by some very shaky (at best) "science." Why 350? Because it is just low enough to be a significant drop, requiring significant action. (ie. transfer of money and power, and redistribution of wealth) Yet it is not quite so low as to appear unreachable, which would cause people to blow it off as impossible. In short, I think it is an arbitrary, meaningless number.

CO2 ain't no problem.

Let's get rid of all of it!

Then, all vegetation will die!

Then, since the vegetation gives us oxygen and food, all herbivores will die and we will have trouble breathing!

But that's not a problem either because we won't have anything to eat....

Oh the beauty of it all...humans exterminated so the good old "Mother" Earth will never be abused again!
