STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Organizers of a proposed charter school named after the president have rescinded the honor after the Obama Administration informed them of a long-standing White House policy disallowing the use of the president's name while he is in office.
The group designing the Barack Obama Community Charter School also learned a state law prohibits naming institutions for a living person without his or her permission. The new name for the proposed K-8 is the Staten Island Community Charter School.
One of the organizers, Lorna Harris of Silver Lake, said committee members are disappointed about having to change the name.
"We chose the name because the president's values and the foundational values of our school are so closely aligned," she said. "We also chose the name because of the inspiration of the president's life story."
Still, Harris said the culture at the school will be just as enriching and inspirational as originally planned.
The ever popular magnet/charter school...
Whatever the heck that is....
Bow Barry Charter School.
Long standing policy? I thought there was a school in Long Island already named after the Messiah.
There’s a few. Most are charter schools, but I think the one in Hempstead, Long Island is a regular school.
Having lived on Long Island, I can tell you Hempstead is the type of neighborhood that would elect Obama with 95% of the vote, if you grasp my meaning.
They tried to rename a Valley Stream LI school but the people rebelled.
They could call it OBummer.
Just cut out the middleman and name it after Karl Marx.
Silly. Marx is White.
I think “Obamunism Grade School” would work just fine. Or “Obamao Elementary.” Or “Obozo Grammar School.” What’s holding them back?
Frank Davis Charter School?
That kills the proposal for many, many years if the socialist's "President-for-Life" supporters get their way.
Because this is Staten Island which will be an epicenter of the tsunami next November, “The Obama school” will NEVER happen.
Gulag No. 1 sounds good.
