BBC ^ | 12/19/09 | BBC

Three Eurostar trains have broken down in the Channel Tunnel due to cold weather, as more snow is expected to cause disruption in parts of Britain.

The temperature difference between the chilly open air and warm tunnel under the English Channel caused the trains to break down, Eurostar said.

It said a rescue locomotive was trying to get them out.

More snow and freezing temperatures are is expected for parts of Scotland and south-east and eastern England.

The three trains were all from Paris to London. Two further trains travelling from Brussels and Paris heading for the tunnel were turned back.

You, sir, are too kind.

I would have posted the Simpson "Ha Ha" pic and then told them to call Al Gore for help with this climate situation.

He is the expert, after all.

Great, I hope it gets cold and stays there and their stupid trains don’t run again until June.

Got no sympathy, none for those globull warming acolytes.

Excellent design work, Euros. Trains that can’t go from cold to warm or vice versa. Brilliant. I wonder how they get their airplanes down from 37,000 feet where it’s -70F.

I just checked London weather ,, it's 28 and they expect a whopping 2" of snow , temps for the next several days are consistant 30's day and night.. doesn't sound too extreme to me. What causes a train to break down when temps go slightly below freezing?

Wouldn’t the tunnel be at a fairly constant temp of 50 or 60 degrees? Even in winter?

Tunnel warm and moist...

Outside temeratures at both ends well below freezing....

Steel and copper good conductors of heat....

tracks freeze along the tunnel....

ice forms on tracks and overhead power lines....

ice is a poor conductor....

trains stall in tunnel.
