Man who inspired the character in ‘Rain Man' has died

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah man who inspired Dustin Hoffman's character in the movie "Rain Man" has died.

Kim Peek, 58, collapsed at his home in Salt Lake City on Saturday from what his dad says was a massive heart attack.

Kim couldn't do simple things like turning on a light or dressing himself because the membrane that allows the right and left hemisphere to talk to each other was missing.

Kim was a unique megasavant. He was able to recall most everything he read or heard -- from zip codes to historical events -- and he could do it in seconds.

In an unprecedented study in 2004, NASA scientists began studying Kim's brain, hoping to find out why his recall continued to get better, even though he was aging.

In blog sites now appearing from around the country, people are saying "there never will be another person quite like Kim. His talents were unique and spectacular. And the love and bond between he and his dad Fran was inspirational."

I wonder if his brain is being donated for research. It sounds like it could be uniquely revealing.

Kim was an amazing human being.

Wow, he truly was........

I think what we are witnessing in these savants is a crack in the window of evolution that is allowing us a glimpse into the future of the potential of the human brain.

Ummm..., I’m looking at that series of videos on Kim, and his dad said that they first noticed Kim’s abilities when he was two years old and he pulled the encyclopedia off the bottom shelf of the bookcase. He read eight volumes and memorized it... !!

I went, “Huh?!” Like... who taught a two-year old to read in the first place and then he memorizes 8 volumes of the encyclopedia... hoo-boy!

While Kim was incredible and a jewel, the true hero of this story is his father, who never once wavered in his love and care for his son.

Through thick and thin, for 58 years, he stood by his boy and did everything necessary to allow Kim to live the life that God had planned for him.

What's with the prof. wearing the gangsta hat sideways? Is he Borg hiding the circuits in the back of his head? Interesting video but a creepy prof........

Oh, my, YES. I used to worry for Kim, and how he would manage without his faithful father. God has taken care of that, and now, Fran can prepare for his own journey. What a beautiful pair of lives. :o(

My older brother had a type of autism..he is similar to the “Rain Man”. Tell him what your birthday is..date month and year and he will tell you what day your were born, he has a thing for maps and numbers, he will tell you what athlete wore what uniform in what game and from what yard line or how far from the hoop or how many bases were stolen, you name it. He was tested and has “ superior intelligence”. He is socially inept, hyper, loud etc and a sweet guy. I am lucky he is my brother.

Yeah, Young Frankenstein-ish, no?

I guess he thought it made him look cool, and it perhaps it hides his bald spot very nicely, like where he burned off all of his hair while experimenting on his own brain with microwaves...
