Forty passengers were reported injured when an American Airlines plane crashed and broke in two after landing at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston shortly after 10:00 last night.

"The injured passengers have been taken to the Kingston Public Hospital," Information Minister Daryl Vaz told the Observer. "There are no reports of fatalities."

Vaz, Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry and National Security Minister Dwight Nelson were quick on the scene and engaged in a head count from the passenger manifest to determine if anyone was missing.

Flight AA331, a Boeing 737-800, had just arrived from Miami in pouring rain with 148 passengers and a crew of six when the accident occurred.

"The plane crashed and broke almost in front of me," said a shaken Naomi Palmer who was in seat number D8.

Palmer said she was feeling some pain and was being supported by a friend on the outside of the arrival area when she spoke with the Observer.

The plane overran the runway, smashed through the perimeter fence, crossed the Port Royal road and ended up on the beach.

"The pilot couldn't stop the plane," one male passenger who opted not to be named, told the Observer.

Ended up on the beach? Maybe the pilot was in a hurry. Glad everyone is ok.

8850 foot runway. Not particularly short, especially by Carribean standards.

Crash crew were all high..... and were heard to say “no problem mon.”

All victims were given a complimentary joint.

Pilot to copilot.... that was the best sex I ever had.

Pot plants on the runway caused the plane to skid.

All injured passengers from the crash at Bob Marley International airport were taken to Bob Marley General Hospital where they were given bong hits and released.

A/C apparently DID NOT break in two, is really a rather minor runway overshoot.

Actually the plane is broken in two—still attached, but between the wings and the tail, the fuselage is cracked open.

A minor runway overshoot would be when a plane can re-used. This plane is scrap.

An American Airlines 737-800....that’s likely not that old of an airplane.

You are right. That amount of damage qualifies as a major accident under the FARs.

I was thinking more of the number of severity of the injuries. They are rather minor, sort of a slow Saturday night in Chicago.

See what happens when you fly into an airport named after a Socialist.

I PROMISE to NEVER fly into Barack Obama International Airport, wherever it is located in the future.

(Spend 30 minutes in baggage claim in the international arrivals hall at JFK and you will know what I mean.)

Being that the 737-800 is new to the American Fleet, the Pilots were very low time in the aircraft. The big question is why they launched into marginal flying conditions and didn’t wait until things improved in the air and at the airport. Overshooting an 8800 ft runway is kind of problamatic.
