New Restrictions Quickly Added for Air Passengers
New York Times ^ | December 27, 2009 | Micheline Maynard and Liz Robbins

Posted on 12/27/2009 7:15:46 AM PST by reaganaut1

In the wake of the terrorism attempt Friday on a Northwest Airlines flight, federal officials on Saturday imposed new restrictions on travelers that could lengthen lines at airports and limit the ability of international passengers to move about an airplane.

The government was vague about the steps it was taking, saying that it wanted the security experience to be “unpredictable” and that passengers would not find the same measures at every airport — a prospect that may upset airlines and travelers alike.

But several airlines released detailed information about the restrictions, saying that passengers on international flights coming to the United States will apparently have to remain in their seats for the last hour of a flight without any personal items on their laps. It was not clear how often the rule would affect domestic flights.

Overseas passengers will be restricted to only one carry-on item, and domestic passengers will probably face longer security lines. That was already the case in some airports Saturday, in the United States and overseas.

The restrictions will again change the routine of air travel, which has undergone an upheaval since the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington in September 2001 and three later attempts at air terrorism.

Soon after the attempt on Friday, travelers at airports around the world began experiencing heightened screening in security lines. On one flight, from Newark Liberty International Airport to Little Rock, Ark., flight attendants kept cabin lights on for the entire trip instead of dimming them for takeoff and landing.

The limits, which brought to mind some of the most stringent policies after the 2001 attacks, come at a difficult time for the airline industry.

>>Cancelled due to the silliness of these “new” rules, and this nonsense about screening practices to be unpredictable, right, like I believe that. . .they just can’t get it right and they will now be out of control profiling old ladies, the Amish but never a muslime.<<

Changing your plans to circumvent government stupidity is useless. It is like saying “I won’t by such-and-such because I don’t want to pay sales tax” or “I won’t leave an estate because of the death tax.” In canceling your trip,. you are essentially letting the government dictate your lifestyle and life decisions.

I fly every week and have been dealing with ever-changing governmental insanity since 9/11. You learn to cope or you can just stay at home.

Because explosive decompression has happened.

The best way to not “inconvenience” 99% of travelers is to screen every Muslim who boards an airplane and comes to the United States. That would make everyone secure.

I choose how much BS I am willing to tolerate.

No one else.

When the BS exceeds threshold for no good purpose, I am done. No more. That's it. Over.

I fly internationally, no choice, so I “cope” when I have to. When I don't have to travel and can drive, then I exercise my right as an American to tell the government to pound sand, that they better get their act together and drop the PC BS.

I choose to tell the government I will not tolerate their BS.

How about you?

When do you say “enough,” that you are not willing to take it anymore?

Is there such a time for you?

Just asking, really, as I suppose there will be, like no carry-on, no shoes, rag-head sheet for clothes when you board. . .what?

WebEx and telecons used to be more pain that travel.

They are now the preferred option.

Yeah, structural failure as opposed to being sucked out a little hole.

Big difference, and if the window takes a shot the rapid decompression takes place but no structural failure is likely.

” Also, the Brits knew about it, they denied him a visa “

The Brits also denied Barry’s half brother Abo Samson Obama a visa this year.
Twice apparently -in January and April of 2009.
Abo made it to the US in January and must have stayed here till April.
Where was he and what was he up to ?

” Samson Obama tried to enter Britain before flying into Washington for Barack’s inauguration on Jan 20 2009.
Samson Obama’s record showed he was accused of a sex attack on a young girl in Nov 2008.
At that time, Samson Obama gave a fake name, Henry Aloo.”

April 2009
“ British officials said they refused to issue a visa to U.S. President Obama’s brother to re-enter Britain after he was questioned on attempted sexual assault.”..
Police also discovered Obama had been living illegally in Britain for seven years, the Times said.”
The Obamas just love the fake names and being illegal aliens.

As long as that is how I make my income, I will do it. It is like paying taxes.

Not for me, nor most of my industry they aren’t. There are too many important subtleties that are imparted personally. Telecommuting works OK for avocations only.

A single bullet did NOT cause Aloha 243.

That was a massive structural failure.

It doesn’t invalidate the Mythbusters’ methods nor conclusions.

Show me where a single bullet (or even a few) caused catastrophic decompression on an airplane. And while you are at it, explain the fault(s) in the processes the Mythbusters used.

Or are you going to just continue to pass along now-discounted urban myths?

3) Blowing out the window of an airplane. Result: Buster's arm was sucked through the opening, and probably would have dismembered a real human being. However, the hole did not expand, and the other passengers probably would have been fine.

FAIL

>>3) Blowing out the window of an airplane. Result: Buster’s arm was sucked through the opening, and probably would have dismembered a real human being. However, the hole did not expand, and the other passengers probably would have been fine.

FAIL<<

You misinterpret the results.

1. This was not from a single bullet. They explosively blew out the whole window AFTER the myth you are repeating was busted and they were into “so what does it take” mode.

2. This did NOT result in explosive decompression, EVEN WHEN they went so far as to take out a whole window.

YOU FAIL.

You have to know the show and read for comprehension.

I put it to you again: When has a single bullet (or even a few) resulted in explosive decompression AND what part of the Mythbusters’ protocol was incorrect? You seem to be OK when quoting them after the myth is busted and they are into “maximum breakage” mode, but that isn’t what you said. You said that they were wrong and then posted the Aloha flight to “prove” your point.

Try to keep up. I said "Yeah, and Mythbusters got it wrong."

They did.

You said that they were wrong and then posted the Aloha flight to “prove” your point.

They were wrong and I posted a link AND the Aloha flight picture to provide evidence.

What did they get wrong?

>>They were wrong and I posted a link AND the Aloha flight picture to provide evidence.<<

How does posting a picture of explosive decompression from catastrophic structural failure have to do with explosive decompression from a bullet?

I ask you again (3rd time): When has a bullet in a plane ever resulted in explosive decompression AND if Mythbusters was wrong, what part of their process was wrong?

Hulka, you’ve got that right about screening people. The rag heads and m.e. individuals will get a pass. I’ve been very wanded when I’ve flown, I have a piece of steel in my hip, plus I have to take of my flip flops flats. Now that is real screening.

“Avocation,” as in hobby or something other than a profession?

And telecommuting is not WebEx or telecons.

Customer meets are required, for sure, but choices are made, and I choose who is important enough for my time and trouble. Besides, most often it is someone making a pitch to me, so who knows, maybe you are one of those traveling salesmen.
