December 24, 2009 This Christmas, 78% of Americans Identify as Christian
Over time, fewer Americans identify as Christian; more have no religious identity
by Frank NewportPRINCETON, NJ -- This Christmas season, 78% of Americans identify with some form of Christian religion, a proportion that has been declining in recent decades. The major reason for this decline has been an increase in the percentage of Americans claiming no religious identity, now at 13% of all adults.

Seventy-eight percent of the adult population today equates to “?” percent of the adult population of 1948 ... IOW, maybe there's 120 million adults today vs say 78 million in 1948 ... the percentage could be down but the number of Christians could be higher ....

The less Christian, the more liberal, Social Conservatism is the foundation of conservatism in America.

If it were not for the massive growth in the Hispanic population, that change would be much more drastic.

78% of Americans are Christian, but 0 runs around the world saying that America is no longer a Christian nation.

Proud Roman Catholic/Easter Orthodox practitioner here. They didn’t call me to ask, and my family occupied 3 long pews at Midnight Mass this Christmas!

And the NEA published the bible-quoting “American Citizens Handbook” from 1941 to 1968.

They do not need to interview anyone in your family as they only need 800 respondents to reach a margin of error of 3.46%.

Sad! But even sadder, how many of those self-professed Christians say so just because "they are not Muslim, or Jewish..."? How many are true Christians, born-again of the Spirit?
Come soon, Lord Jesus!
Any Messianic Jews in the forum? I would love to know how to say "Come soon, Lord Jesus" in hebrew, and use it as my tagline.

The way the story presented itself was that supposedly there are fewer Christians today than in 1948 because of the percentages. I’m saying that the population is larger than in 1948 so even though the percentage is down (78%) there could be more professing Christians today than the 91% in 1948 due to a larger population ......

The major reason for this decline has been an increase in the percentage of Americans claiming no religious identity, now at 13% of all adults. Or, it could be because we have more non-Christians immigrating to this country.
I don't think these results really mean anything other than we have more non-Americans living here.

The government is bringing in whole hoards of muslim tribes and putting them in upstate NY and other rust belt areas. In the little city I live near (Utica, NY) there are tens of thousands of muslims. The government is changing the demographics of the United States forever.

The article did not mention raw numbers, but rather percentages of those who call themselves Christian.
So today, due largely to immigration there are more people in the US and thus for Christians, but the percentage of Christians has dropped.
And my guess is that if you were to exclude those from the sample that migrated here from Latin America or are of Hispanic decent that the number of those calling themselves Christian would be far below 78%.

That is the point.
Without all that Catholic Immigration from Mexico, the percentage of Christians in the US would be much lower.
