Strange booms from the sky have San Diego residents on edge. And they're not alone. I rather think all booms are a bit strange.

Meteors can also give a good “boom” if large enough- usually a double-boom akin to supersonic aircraft. One did exactly that over my area a few years ago. Luckily, folks also saw the trail in the sky - averting rumors about military aircraft.
The military always does supersonic flight over designated corridors, and we always log the times and locations of the flight - so as to have records when folks call. I did this all the time while on duty at Edwards AFB.
