Napolitano announces international airport security campaign By Tony Romm - 12/31/09 04:30 PM ET
The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday announced it would launch a campaign next week to strengthen security screening procedures at a host of international airports.
The effort is part of the White House's heightened response to a Christmas Day attempt to bomb Delta Flight 253 in Detroit, a flight that originated in Amsterdam.
“As part of the ongoing review to determine exactly what went wrong leading up to Friday’s attempted terrorist attack, we are looking not only at our own processes, but also beyond our borders to ensure effective aviation security measures are in place for U.S-bound flights that originate at international airports,” Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in a statement Thursday.
Senior Homeland Security officials will meet with leaders at major airports in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East in the coming weeks "to review security procedures and technology being used to screen passengers on flights bound for the United States," the department announced this afternoon. Napolitano said she would follow up on those meetings with her own "ministerial level" discussions.
Europe will be the first leg of the wide outreach effort, where U.S. officials will brief their European counterparts "on the findings of President Obama’s aviation security review," which he ordered last week, according to the department.
The secretary did not provide any other schedule or meeting details.
White House officials have scrambled since Christmas Day to assure passengers that air travel is safe, a mission that has resulted in a host of new security rules on international flights that land in the United States.
Some countries have since followed suit, announcing they would require international passengers to pass through full-body scanners prior to boarding their planes. But U.S. officials perhaps still hope to spearhead a larger, more unified effort to increase airport security.

You are correct. It falls to Jim Jones’ office as that is where all the intelligence information is to be disseminated from since Obama made the change by Executive Order earlier this year.

Personally, I think Janet is toast. And additionally, I would not get on an airplane because it’s become way too uncomfortable.
I disagree on both counts:
1) Napolitano is an essential link for this administration in their efforts to inflict Amnesty upon us. THAT was her calling in Arizona.
2) I would not get on an airplane because they refuse to profile who they know to be the "real" terrorists and not housewives, grandparents and businessmen - making the average American "expendable" in order to retain their politically correct appearance and not risk another CAIR litigation about Muslims who refuse to cooperate with flight personnel.
During the Cold War, I worked around nuke weapons storage areas and bomber alert areas, and believe you me, if I made a mistake in procedure, I drew a LOT of attention immediately.
I remember once standing out in the cold, 50 degrees in my shirt sleeves in a howling wind, with my hands raised in the air for 20 minutes (and your arms get really, really tired after 20 minutes; try it some time), all because I inadvertently stepped on a painted red line on the alert ramp.
And those nuke alert Security Police knew their job very well. I was impressed with the way they impressed upon me that I had done a bad thing. They all knew who I was, knew my security clearance was good, they had seen me a hundred times, but I made a mistake, and they did what they were supposed to do.
When I think about those days, the discipline those SPs had (because they would have been FIRED if they hadn't done that to me) and then the depths to which we have fallen now with Her Illustriousness, Janet Nappy.....geez.
Next she’ll announce that she’s going to sue the “extremists”.
FYI, I flew back to the US from Rome last night on an Alitalia flight. We went through the usual security process at first, metal detector, belts off, etc. Although we were not required to take off our shoes. I saw a woman pass through security with 3 large umbrellas that had metal tips on the ends that were about 3-4 inches long. She was not stopped! You could do some serious damage to someone with those umbrellas.
At the gate, every passenger, including small children, was completely patted down, all carry on bags were opened. The flight took off about 2 hours behind schedule.
As the flight approached JFK, approx an hour out, an announcement was made that everyone was to remain in their seats until the plane landed and had reached the gate. This was not enforced by the flight crew as many of the Italian passengers continued to congregate out of their seats, as they had for most of the flight. You would think that they would require passengers to stay in their seats for the whole flight, except to go to the bathroom, but that was not the case. I was not happy about all these people walking around and talking in small groups.
The GPS system which shows the current location of the aircraft and the remaining time and distance of the flight was turned off about one hour before landing. I’m not sure what this accomplishes other than to not allow someone to better pinpoint the planes location and the time remaining until landing.
I have no problem with the increased security measures, and think that we would be better off if more airlines handled security like El Al does. Although this process was nowhere near that level of detail.
What happened to Obama’s policy of submissiveness to foreign governments? This policy sounds like imperialism on steroids. Maybe that kickass cowboy from Texas knew what he was doing.
