One More Feminist Upset Over Unfair Aging Differences
NewsBusters ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Posted on 01/02/2010 6:51:38 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

If you bother to read Joanna Weiss' column in today's Boston Globe, expect to get a sense of deja . . . lu. Like untold screeds that have preceded it, "Hollywood’s burden on aging women" stamps its feet over the unequal treatment of aging in men and women.

You know: male stars are allowed to age gracefully, but women must struggle ever-harder to conform to a youthful stereotype of sex-appeal. Unfair!

The feminist response is to blame the culture, in this case embodied by Hollywood, for promoting shallow, sexist values. But the fault, dear Joanna, is not in our stars but in our ourselves, or more precisely, in our DNA.

Well that’s what they get for creating a sexualised, “liberated” promiscuous youth culture. They wanted to be be like men and sleep around, which means being judged on their youthful appearance, because all the “liberation” in the world won’t change men’s biological urges and attraction towards female sexual beauty. They messed with a system which served women well for hundreds of years-monogamous lifetime relationship and a premium on marriage and chastity-and now they’re reaping what they sowed. They got it azz-backwards, because women are more judged on their youth and physical appearance now than at any other time in history, PLUS they’re expected to maintain that youthful attractiveness longer, because they don’t have the security of a long-term monogamous relationship-namely, marriage-to succor them when that is all past. They wanted it all, “just like men”, and now they have less than before.

There are very few Hollywood types that I will make the effort of finding my reading glasses and typing out a couple hundred via the teeny tiny keys of my cell phone.

Ms. Bardot is one that I will do that for.

Why? Well I would have to play Hollywood Trivia with myslef to name (in this moment) any of her films...but I do KNOW that BB has been arrested and sited; been to court; paid fines; and will in the future face JAIL for her speaking out against the Islamification of her beloved France.

Yes...rather than nipping and tucking; living on lettuce leaves and frettting over the passage of time, Ms. Bardot has used her celebrity to speak out against the PC and the kowtailing to Shar’ia.

For that I applaud her. For that we should all applaud her (as opposed to the lose 60lbs and the eye makeup comments).

Rather than sitting and ‘being’ something to admire, she is risking her very life speaking out as she does.

Pffft to those who criticize her aging look.

That’s another area in which our great great grandmothers knew better than we do-protecting their complexions from the sun. Their beautiful peaches-and-cream or ivory complexions surely lasted longer than today’s popular “crispy critter” look.

Problem is that too many men think with their gonads and not with their minds and hearts, and too many women knock themselves out trying to please these guys.

How fortunate of you to be blessed with a different mix of hormones..For the rest of us, all I can say is...Sorry !

Nature made the qualities that most women find sexually attractive in a man (confidence & stature) increase with age, while the qualities that most men find sexually attractive in women (smooth skin and gravity free curves) decrease with age.

Think of it as evolution in action. Men are attracted to healthy, fit women in their prime childbearing years. Meanwhile, an a guy who has survived to middle age and achieved status has demonstrated the fitness of his genes.

I think that most movies made today feature many more male characters than female. All the blockbusters, Star Trek, GI Joe, Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Old Dogs, 2012, Inglorius Basterds, Harry Potter, I could go on and on and on. Even cartoons like A Christmas Carol, Alvin and the Chipmunks feature more male than female characters. TV cartoons like Phineas and Ferb, Spongebob, Fairly OddParents, Penguins of Madagascar, etc., feature more boy than girl characters. Any time a movie even has a 50-50 split male/female or greater in favor of female characters, it is tagged a 'chick flick' which is the kiss of death.

It wasn't always this way. In the 30's we had Gone With the Wind, a war movie which managed to have more strong female characters than male, The Wizard of Oz, with almost an even split. These were big blockbusters. In the 40 and 50's we had the golden age of chick flicks, musicals, and Doris Day movies. There was an unusual movie, "The Women", made with only female actors, even in bit parts, like a cab driver. I would love to see a movie using that technique again.

Isn't it funny that when women are sway to their hormones they're "irrational,"

Women are celebrated and defended and encouraged to "sway" to their hormones by enlightened feminists , and then when they get older and the hormones begin to wane they bitch about it. ... Go figure.

LOL, wouldn’t it be ironic if a bunch of man-hating feminists had been played by a group of “drunken frat boys”!

They not only have to worry now that men are still turning to their younger more attractive sisters, they also have to compete with other men now.

But these results are to be expected from the usual liberal penchant for dismissing reality. I’m sure they never gave a thought, when they were young hippie females, and clamoring for the “right” to be as slutty as some men(not all, or even most), to the fact that their youth would be fleeting, as it is for all humanity. Liberals are notorious for not factoring reality into their experiments with human nature.

I’m not sure I’d like to see a contemporary remake of “The Women”. There was one made in the 50s called “The Opposite Sex” with June Allyson, and even then they screwed it all up. Today it would be awful. And I hope no one ever has the audacity to tamper with “Gone With The Wind”. None of today’s pretty boys could even approach Clark Gable.

I’ve wondered why the actors from Hollywood’s Golden Age always seemed like grown men even in their youth, while today’s actors seem like immature boys even into their 40s and beyond.

>>>men think with their gonads and not with their minds and hearts, and too many women knock themselves out trying to please these guys.<<<

While the first part of your assessment may have truth in it, I think it is women themselves who are most brutal to each other about their looks. Thus, many women aren’t trying to please the guys, but rather please their hypercritical female friends. I can’t tell you how many husbands I know who are perfectly happy with their aging wives, while the women themselves show great insecurity about the aging process.
