Hawaii Hopes for Economic Revival in Wake of Obama Visit (Shave-Ice business booming)
Fox News ^ | 1/2/2010 | Steve Centanni

Posted on 01/02/2010 2:39:37 PM PST by tobyhill

As President Obama gets a much-needed rest in Hawaii, state officials are hoping that his vacation brings the islands, once a popular vacation spot, much-needed revenue.

"We depend mostly on tourism for our state economy, and when tourism went down, it affects everyone from the state budget to the person that does the dry cleaning," said Marsha Weinert, a state tourism liaison.

Weinert said tourism, which accounts for 25 percent of Hawaii's overall economy, has declined in the last two years by nearly $3 billion.

Now with an unemployment rate of 7 percent and a budget shortfall expected to reach $1.2 billion by the end of 2010, state officials are looking for ways to cut.

Hmmm . . . good luck with that. Between the airline search hassles and the fact that major conservatives get sick in Hawaii . . . I don’t see it happening. Obama ain’t no kind of draw for red staters.

Hawaii is the most racist state in the Union. Those with “native blood” are becoming more and more unaccepting of anyone without “native blood”.

The last time we were there, just a few years ago, we were warned not to travel around the country at night and never go hiking in the mountains because of the marijuana growers who are armed to the teeth to protect their crops.

Of course it’ll go up after he leaves. Think about how many businesses have had to shut down because of his visit. No helicopter rides. No island hoppers. Security stopping tourists at every point in his trip. How many tourists were turned away from the amusement park today when he and all the relatives and SS were there for a lousy hour on my dollar.

1. they’re called ‘haoles’.

2. No president should eat snow cones in public. They also should not be seen in public (even getting in their limo) with sandals, or untucked shirt.

3. At this rate, it may be next year until the President admits the panti-bomber had alterior motives!

4. Thanks for letting me vent.

Put the fact the Hawaii is O’s “home state” out of your mind. The fact is, Hawaii is a fantastic place for a vacation. Especially if you live in a raining or snowy place.

We just got back from six nights in Honolulu. 82 degrees. Running in Kapialoni Park. Wonderful food with live Hawaiian music. Art museums, botanical gardens, hiking, warm beaches.

Honolulu is the best we think because there is so much to do with easy access. We stay south of the main city park and walk into Waikiki
i beach area. Everyone is relaxed, laid back and having fun.

" Good grief. I’ve never been there and was thinking about going, but that’s interesting."

Been there several times while in the Navy and don't recall anything special about the place. Very expensive as I remember (try $5.oo a beer in a hole in the wall bar and that was 19 years ago). I suppose if you had enough money even hell would seem like a nice place to visit.

My aunt, a WAC, was stationed there during WWII; some years later she went back and was highly disappointed. What was once a mostly unspoiled series of beautiful islands had turned into an overcrowded and expensive tourist trap.

There are a lot of really nice places here on the mainland and in other countries. And most would be a lot cheaper than travel to Hawaii.

Of course, when you’re the president and have your trip paid for by the taxpayers, money is no object.

Most of the locals make a big deal about hating the “Haole” and on the beaches “protect their turf”. Typical tribal mentality. It is a liberal sh@t hole with all the most beautful beaches, but a Detroit, Compton, Newark government that wants to “rule” over the undeducated populace while living in paradise. Lots of meth, pot and petty crime. It is like Mexico used to be. Nice to visit but have to be careful of the “natives”. I lived in Kailua and Kuai.

What gets me about Hawaii, the sham that is Hawaii, is how anti white it is. Now I can see the real native Hawaiians wanting some respect to a point, but what irks me is how other non white Asian groups try also to jump into the native bandwagon and try to pass themselves off as also “natives”. I have news for them - the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipinos and all the others try to act as if they are also native because they are not Caucasian and because they also lay claim to being a Pacific Ocean peoples. Do you know what I am referring to?

Before Hawaii was discovered there were only the native inhabitants...the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipinos and all the others came when the Anglos came.

Has anyone seen the Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipinos and all the others trying to jump into the minority mentality lets get benefits out of the Haoles bandwagon.

Anyway it also seems to be pure Hawaiian nowadays because the islands have become a big melting pot - there is almost no thing as a native anymore.

Might be nice during winter. I was there for a conference in June. Hot and humid; if you ever got out of the wind you were immediately drenched. Miserable hiking to the convention center in the rain -- out of a clear blue sky, precipitating from 100 feet or so up.

Also remember it as expensive.

Let’s see now; State of Hawaii......State of Hawaii....isn’t that where they have Barack Hussein Obama’s birth documents sealed in a vault and, thus far, have refused to release any information regarding his true birth records?

Yes, I believe that’s the place!

Weeeeel, in that case; I think Hawaii might be the LAST place I would ever consider going to on vacation and spending my hard-earned money. In fact, the whole state can go pound sand, as far as I’m concerned!

And please permit me to add: I don’t wish Hawaii any bad luck; but if they should happen to have some, I wouldn’t mind hearing about it!!!!!

I’m with garjog, Rome2000. You will love it! There is a lot to do there, whether you want to explore, tour, eat, snorkel, etc., or just relax. I don’t know where you are going to be, but I’ve stayed on Waikiki and in Kona on the Big Island. Both were fantastic. My favorite thing to do was parasailing, which I did on both of those islands. I recommend it if you get a chance!

Hawaii is not cheap, but it is well worth the expense. The fact that your vacation is going to be free hopefully means that you’ll be able to spring for a few things (tours, restaurants, etc.) that you might not have otherwise.

Don’t let President Usurper ruin it for you. Hawaii is great. Have a wonderful trip! I can’t wait to get back there myself.

Go. You’ll have a fantastic time. I recently lived there for a couple of years, and had a refreshing, extended vacation there last summer. It’s very easy to ID and avoid the run-down, depressed Demoncrat plantation type neighborhoods, so don’t worry about those. If your wife loves jewelry, budget that in now... you won’t be too concerned about the cost of a hamburger. :)

I’ve been in and out of the airports numerous times. They are all very low-stress. Even going through Honolulu airport is a fairly pleasant experience - nothing like the mainland.

Oh yeah, the airports! The one in Kona is awesome. Baggage claim is open-air. You are outside getting your luggage off the carousels. Covered, yes, but outside. So cool.

The two hotels I’ve stayed in were similar. You just walked right in off the street (Waikiki) or the grounds (Kona). No doors, just lovely, open lobbies. It really does create a relaxed atmosphere. (I’m sure there were retractable doors/walls, don’t panic, but everything was open during the day and evening.)

I’m jealous of you!!! :)

My family and I lived in Hawaii from 1996 to 2004; travelled almost every paved and dirt road in Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. Lived on Oahu and visited the other three islands four or five times each, camping sometimes. Only had one incident in Hawaii in eight years, but then I’ve had one incident here in Colorado Springs in five years. And my four years in Wash D.C. showed me I could get an incident walking through the south-side any day (actually had a policeman warn us to “get out of here, now”, and it was 4 pm!).

Hawaii is spectacular. If you go, buy a copy of the “Revealed” series of Hawaii Island books, for example:
“Oahu Reveled”, by Andrew Doughty, Wizard Publications, Inc. They are the best at showing the off-beat fun and somewhat exotic sites, and well as the standard; great maps and insights to make your time profitable. Every beach is explained so know the best for snorkeling, or nude bathing or whatever.

Remember, never leave valuables in your car (especially at parking for tourist sites…you’ll see lots of broken window glass around), and don’t surf western Oahu. And “haole” is not a bad term, just means non-Hawaiian; we referred to ourselves that way when appropriate. Keep a low profile and orally appreciate the beauty to the people there and you will connect with a couple of locals for a few minutes; it will give you a nice memory.

I wonder if some of the bad behavior by the few bad guys isn’t also an attempt to isolate Hawaii. If so, why let them get away with it?

The Pali highway, the snorkeling and the museum/cultural center are interesting. Also, fresh pineapple.

Other than that, after a few days, you end up driving in circles and looking for sea life.

All that said, every American should see the Arizona memorial. Every single American.
