ASPIRE TO A VISION

A scene in the movie Karate Kid was quite striking. Daniel went to see Mr. Miyagi and found him trimming a delicate bonsai tree. Daniel was fascinated and wanted to try it, but he had no idea how it was done. Miyagi told him to close his eyes and picture in his mind the way he wanted the tree to look. After Daniel found that vision in his mind, Miyagi told him to open his eyes and start trimming the tree. Daniel's every move was deliberate and focused. Then he stopped. He asked, "How do I know if my picture is right?" Miyagi replied, "If the picture comes from your heart, then it must be right. Just trust your picture."

Changes in our personal attitudes and behavior are difficult. However, change is possible if we aspire to a vision. Moses didn't think of liberating the Israelite slaves in Egypt until his experience with God and the burning bush. Paul didn't believe in Jesus until he received a vision while on his journey to Damascus. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave himself to the Civil Right Movement because he had a dream of equality.

Prayer: Lord, help us vision our changes, and change to achieve our vision, for the enrichment of our marriages, our health, and our quality of life. Amen.

Onward Christian Soldiers

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, or National Guardsman
Feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is lovingkindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8

GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR TROOPS!

Amazing Grace

by John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, .
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR TROOPS!

DEAR GOD, who suffered
torment, agony and death upon the Cross
to free our souls from the chains of iniquity;
protect and defend our troops. Guide them in
the performance of their duties. Strengthen
them to endure hardship, danger and depri-
vation in Your service. Let their efforts free
the people of Iraq and Afghanistan from the
chains of terror and slavery, foster a lasting
peace in the region, and bring all to a greater
share in Your Mercy.
Amen.

THE NAVY HYMN

Eternal Father, Strong to Save

The Marine Corps Verse:

Eternal Father, grant we pray
To all Marines both night and day,
The Courage, Honor, Strength and Skill
Their Land to serve, Thy Law Fulfill.
Be Thou the Shield forevermore
From every peril to the Corps!

This is the day which the LORD hath made;
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalms 118:24(KJV)

Have a Blessed Lord’s Day!

Register Rock
We are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. —Hebrews 12:1

Along the old Oregon Trail in Idaho there is a marker—a giant lava boulder known locally as Register Rock. It’s located in an area which was one of the favorite overnight camping areas for westbound immigrants who traveled the trail in the 19th century.

Travelers often inscribed their names on the rock as a memorial to their passage. Register Rock stands as a monument to their courage and tenacity.

When I think of Register Rock, I think of other pilgrims who have passed by us on their journey. Hebrews 11 lists some of those hardy souls—Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel, to name a few.

But there are other more recent pilgrims: my mother and father, my fifth-grade Sunday school teacher Mrs. Lincoln, my youth leader John Richards, my mentors Ray Stedman and Howard Hendricks, and a host of others I could name. They may not have inscribed their names on rocks, but they’re written in my memory.

The author of Hebrews reminds us to remember “pilgrims” who have gone before us, especially those “who have spoken the Word of God” to us and to consider “the outcome of their conduct” (Heb. 13:7). And, most important, he encourages us to follow their faith.

The paths of leadership are trod
By those who fix their eyes on God;
Their steadfast spirit points the way
For us to follow day by day. —D. De Haan
