Racial Preferences by the Numbers (black = +310 SAT, Hispanic +130, Asian -140)
National Review ^ | November 30, 2009 | Robert VerBruggen

It’s hard to get a straight answer as to how pervasive racial preferences are. On the one hand, many academics say preferences hardly even exist — they’re just a tie-breaker that admissions officers use on rare occasions. On the other hand, the same academics often say preferences are crucial to diversity, and their elimination would wreak havoc on campuses nationwide. Perhaps nowhere has this bizarre contradiction been on starker display than in No Longer Separate, Not Yet Equal — a book that manages, despite this contradiction, to shed light on various controversies in higher ed.

THE EXTENT OF PREFERENCES Using the National Study of College Experience (NSCE) — a collection of information from eight anonymous elite colleges — authors Thomas J. Espenshade and Alexandria Walton Radford are able to calculate various applicants’ odds of getting into a school. They discover some mildly interesting trends regarding social class (more on that later), but their results for race are truly stunning. After academic performance and demographic factors have been taken into account, black applicants are more than five times as likely as whites to be accepted at NSCE private schools, and 220 times as likely to be accepted at NSCE public schools. Asian applicants, meanwhile, are only about a third as likely as whites to get big envelopes from private institutions, and one-fifth as likely to gain admission to public ones.

Putting preferences in terms of test scores, at private schools, blacks get an advantage, compared to whites, worth 310 SAT points (out of 1600), Hispanics an advantage of 130, and Asians a disadvantage of 140. At public schools, the authors present the difference in ACT points: blacks 3.8 (out of 36), Hispanics 0.3, Asians –3.4.

Institutions that discriminate on the basis of race should get Federal money -- including financial aid dollars.

The less you expect the less you are going to get...

The more you expect the more you are going to get...

Why liberals can’t seem to fathom these simple “FACTS OF LIFE” and they are bonafide FACTS shows that very little was ever expected from them....

My son tried applying to colleges with his race checked off as Hispanic, perfectly acceptable since his mother is from Peru. We didn’t see any benefit at all. Perhaps it’s a combination of race and income that really gets the benefit.

“Institutions that discriminate on the basis of race should get Federal money — including financial aid dollars.”

Exactly.

And that policy should be retroactive 100 years and impose fines on all public universities that used race as a basis for admissions between 1910 and 1965.

310 points is a lot of points! That’s the effective SAT boost that black applicants get over whites.

There’s more—Asians are at a 140 point DISadvantage to whites. So, adding it up, Blacks get a 450 point SAT boost over Asians. And, this is while the SC has said that racial preferences are illegal.

As Orwell said, some animals are more equal than others.

I’m so glad BHO is the post-racial President. I’m turning blue holding my breath while I wait for him to fix this clear inequality.

Most institutions of “higher,” Oops, I meant “liberal” learning are socialist when it comes to ideology (but not salary). George Orwell had already recognized that socialist ideologies mean “some are more equal than others.”

I’ll just tell all my white sons, “You’ve gotta work twice as hard and be twice as smart to get half as far. It’s your skin color. They can’t overlook it. It’s your burden to bear in this unfair world.”

You can’t have a culture that opts for Ebonics, says that correcting students’ grammar is “racist”(Florida), and has a low percentage of two-parent homes (so that the young join gangs
to find the missing family),

and expect that culture to produce a number of college graduates equivalent to that from, say, a proto-typical Asian culture, which stresses family and education.

So where’s the surprise?

It has nothing to do with racism, and fighting “racism” won’t fix the problem.

It has to do with fixing the culture; and in that, the minorities have been the architects of their own failures.

That form of speaking is used several times in a book I have from 1918. A lot of people think that it is modern, wasn't it very popular in the 1990s?

I would be curious to find out if people with Jewish surnames are treated like Asians.

Mrs. Jewbacca applied to several graduate programs of equivalent selectivity.

Her maiden name is decidedly “Jewish.” My sur-name is rather amazingly generic French.

Mid-application process we married.

She was rejected to all (a sample of 3) where she used he maiden name and accepted to all (a sample of 4) where she used her married name.

All comprable schools; filled out within three weeks of another.

Coincidence, perhaps. But we always wondered.

It is also interesting to look at the home life these kids come from. Typically, in Asian homes, discipline for poor grades comes if the kid gets less than an “A.” In white homes, the acceptable grade is a “B.” In black homes, it is a “C.”

As one poster stated, it’s about expectations. And it all starts at home.

That is pretty vague. What kind of Blacks are we talking about here? Light skinned or dark skinned? With Negro accents or without? Would Obama get 155 point advantage because he is only 50% Black? What about an African American Albino?

The government needs to pinpoint these inconsistancies.

And here in San Francisco government funds can be used to turn a Latino into a Latina.

They pay for it in sublte ways...

A black guy I knew went to a black doctor. He was pretty sick, but this black doctor was like a supermarket butcher...

Must have gotten into med school under affirmative action. Not sure if he knew an eye from an ear.

Maybe the Hispanic advantage only works if the surname looks Hispanic.

You have to have the surname.

Only Hipanics with Hispanic daddies get the benefit.
