A major magnitude 7.3 quake hit the impoverished country of Haiti Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The epicentre of the quake, which was initially reported a magnitude 7.0 off the coast, was located inland, six miles (10 km) west of Carrefour, close to the capital Port-au-Prince and was only 20.5 miles (30 km) deep. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere....

You might be thinking of Port Royal in Jamaica. It was totally destroyed and largely submerged as the result of an earthquake sometime in the 17th century. This is quite close to Haiti and likely puts perspective to the newsfolks assertion that earthquakes are not common in the area. A subduction zone is int the trenches just north of Hispaniola and there are very active Caribbean plate volcanoes.

This nation needs to be in our collective FReper prayers....

Lots of rebar in that building, as well as concrete block around the roof. Not sure how that’s supposed to make it better, but that’s what the engineer told us to do.
We were in La Chappelle (1984, Teen Missions Intl.)
Port Au Prince - what little we saw coming through the airport was pretty scary.

Prayers up.

problems:
overpopulation - no birth control
protected aquifers on hillsides were built on.
