Samaritan's Purse and World Vision are two organizations who will give relief to those in dire need here, and can be relied upon as truly Christian organizations which send donations to the victims, and not to line the pockets of the "administrators."

Please give to this great need.

I was just looking at the island on google earth and the differences between Haiti and the Dominican Republic are visible from space.

The problem of evil in the world and reconciling it with a loving God is something that has been studied and debated by Christians for centuries.

If you disregard Scripture, it is an irreconcilable problem. But if you seek to understand Scripture, and accept it as the word of God, then you see that God is indeed Sovereign and Omnipotent as well as loving - in fact He IS Love. You also see that humanity is fallen and the earth is temporarily under the grip of sin, and thus there is evil in the world. God is allowing Satan to have some control, but only for a season.

What we, as Christians must do is to seek to understand His ways, to seek to reflect Him when illness or tragedy strike, and trust Him by accepting that in the end, the battle belongs to the Lord.

(To tell the truth, that's the only way I can deal with Obama. Evil loses in the end, and he will reap what he has sown).

In the mean time, we, as human beings given a choice by our Creator, need to do what we can to help those who have been hurt by this disaster, and pray for the survivors.

Maybe Obama will see this as an opportunity to reinstall Aristide as dictator for a 3rd time.

It could be both Jack. The quake was practically right under Port au Prince. Dominican Republic is the other country, they got shook pretty good, people running and freaking, but it wasn’t a direct hit.

That’s right, in order to control behavior I recommend taxing Earthquakes, Volcano s, poverty and disease. We can influence behavior by making this unfortunate behavior economically untenable.

Very good answer. A good illustration can be found in the parable of the wheat and the weeds (Matthew 13:24-30)

Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field. But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way.

And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle. And the servants of the goodman of the house coming said to him: Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it cockle?

And he said to them: An enemy hath done this. And the servants said to him: Wilt thou that we go and gather it up?

And he said: No, lest perhaps gathering up the cockle, you root up the wheat also together with it. Suffer both to grow until the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers: Gather up first the cockle, and bind it into bundles to burn, but the wheat gather ye into my barn.

“I’m confused. Isn’t Haiti one of two countries on the island of Hispaniola?
Did the quake only effect the Haitian end of the island?

Or could it be that we’re seeing another media production like New Orleans and Katrina?”

Are you actually being serious? I certainly hope not.

Thank you for a wonderful Scriptural illustration of the point, Alberta's Child.

We are not yet at the harvest.

Ultimately, are not religions predominantly based on faith in their underlying premises rather than logic?

Firstly, your lumping all "religions" together is a faulty premise in your question. Some religions are much better than others because they believe in Faith AND Reason.

Here's the latest I've heard:

The whole island was filled with grey smoke as the reported 7.0 destroyed all of the downtown area and was felt as far as the Dominican Republic and even Cuba. At this moment, no one is allowed inside his or her houses and there is minimal chance of communication....The city of Petionville was hit hard as one of the hospitals there (Notre Petit Freres et Soeurs) collapsed with patients still inside.

I recall reading once that I believe the sugar caners destroyed Haiti and left it with worthless land that is barren and cannot sustain much of anything. I pity the poor people who are ignorant and practice vodoo, probably because that is what they know. We cannot understand such poverty and what these people suffer daily. Statistics show only about 30% are employed of 9,000,000 people It is truly a hell hole on earth.

Before going off on the UN too bad, consider the question.... Why is th UN there? What could possibly happen to make the UN come?

I’m confused. Isn’t Haiti one of two countries on the island of Hispaniola?
______
______
______

The whole island is under a whammy. Voodoo curses. Santeria curses. Bad juju there from generations of mucking about with the dark side
Yes Haiti and Dominican Republic both occupy Hispaniola which I think is where Columbus landed first
