Supreme Court Reverses Limits on Campaign Spending (cripples McCain-Feingold-Thompson)

WASHINGTON—A divided Supreme Court struck down limits on corporate political spending, overturning two precedents in a ruling likely to affect campaigning in the 2010 elections.

President Barack Obama called the decision a victory for big oil, Wall street and other interests, and said he would work with lawmakers to craft a "forceful response."

The ruling underscored the impact of former President George W. Bush's two appointments to the court. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito joined the five-justice majority in ruling that a central provision of the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign-finance act violated the First Amendment by restricting corporations from funding political messages in the run-up to elections.

The five conservative judges — Alito, Roberts, Scalia, Kennedy, and Thomas, ruled for Citizens United.

The four liberal judges — Stevens, Breyer, Ginsburg, and Sotomayor, made up the minority.

Majority opinion written by Kennedy.

After what seems like months being the bugs, it’s nice that we conservatives get to be the windshield — for a few days at least...

"This is poisonous to our democracy," said Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.). Mr. Schumer said the Senate Rules Committee, of which he is chairman, will hold hearings in the next several weeks aimed at crafting legislation to respond to the ruling. He said he hoped to have a law in place in time for congressional elections this November.

Translation: "How dare you unrig the rules we rigged in our favor? Well, we're just gonna re-rig 'em!"

WOW, you mean, like, the Supreme Court actually used the Constitution of the United States correctly?

WOW, wonders never cease.

Next thing, they’ll be admitting that Orly Taitz has a right to find out why 0bama is using the Social Security Number that once belonged to a Connecticut resident.

I’m holding my breath.

The ruling underscored the impact of former President George W. Bush's two appointments to the court.

Still doesn't excuse the fact that GWB violated his oath to uphold the constitution by signing this POS into law. Leaving it to the SC to do his dirty work was a crap shoot; i.e., what if one of the conservatives on the court had died or resigned in the last year? The vote would have been 5-4 to uphold, and we'd have had this garbage for all time. As it is, a lib SC could revisit this and reverse today's ruling at any time in the future.

If the pols really want to reduce the amount of corruption and money spent on elections they should reduce their power and give it back to the people.

The more concentrated the power the more the corruption.
