I actually like this idea.
Shout out to Willie.

Say hey, Laz!!!
Howya been doin?

Obama and Vice President Joe Biden plan to announce grants for 13 major corridors during a town hall meeting in Tampa, Fla., Thursday, the president's first public appearance following his speech to the nation

Needless to say, I like this idea also...
Of course, a lot depends on specifically which projects get funded and which do not.
With many more worthy projects needing funding than what's currently available, I hope they actually make some good selections rather than pi$$ away the opportunity.

The Cato Institute did a very nice report about this late last year, showing that the costs will be outrageous, ridership will be lower than stated and limited to those with easy access to the few city centers the trains will serve and who are rich enough to buy the tickets, and the trains won't be as environmentally friendly as supporters say. The article points out that cheapest and most environmentally benign transport is actually intercity busses!

This is just a wet-dream of the Europhiles in the administration. Europe has 50% more people on 60% less land, the cities are more compact, and the personal auto transit system is not as developed. The short distances between cities make air travel a hassle, and government subsidies are the only thing that keep the faster train companies solvent.

The article showed that the average American will drive 4000 miles on the interstate per year but only 60 miles per year by high-speed rail.

Every single one of these programs grossly underestimates the price and overestimates projected revenue.

Yes, I’m sure the Airline companies need the competition.
Eisenhour had the right idea with the freeway system to
creat interior lines of transport and communication.
(an idea he got from Germany)

This doesn’t make any sense, no one is going to ship freight
on it, and the prices will be too high for the majority of
people.

Waste of tax dollars.

Well heck, that shouldn't be surprising...
You are aware that Cato was founded by Texas Oil Billionaire Charles G. Koch, aren't you?
Has received funding from American Petroleum Institute, ExxonMobil, Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation....

You don't REALLY think the Oil Industry wants us to build transportation infrastructure that is fuel efficient and will make us less dependent on the product they sell, do you??

Reminds me of the Erie Canal route. The NE of the US won CWI and dictated who’d benefit as a result.

I live in a small Texas town, about 40 miles south of Houston. We don’t even have a city bus here or a taxi service.
