Troll Dissection 101: Can You Spot and Counter Troll Comments?
Hillbuzz ^ | Hillbuzz

Posted on 01/29/2010 4:33:57 PM PST by Brugmansian

Troll Dissection 101 is an ongoing series where we’ll take you through troll droppings we find, and give you our take on what the DNC and Obama propagandists were trying to accomplish with them.

What follows is a comment caught today in spam filters, with our breakdown of the psychology employed in it.

We’d love to say the DNC and Obama propagandists behind these things incorrectly think Americans are so stupid they’ll fall for this stuff, but in reality, a good many people DO fall for this stuff. The problem, we’ve found, is that Americans in general are just SO NICE.

They are good, honest, decent people who approach the world thinking all those they encounter are good, honest, and decent people too. That’s why trolls are always “given the benefit of the doubt” and, largely, why people like BigotBasher, Wonk Hussein, Rumproast, Daily Kos, Snarkopolitan, DemocraticUnderground, and others on the Left are allowed to keep doing the things they do to attack people. Most people who are attacked don’t want to fight back, because fighting back is unpleasant, just as thinking about trolls deliberately trying to trick and demoralize people is unpleasant as well. It’s truly creepy knowing there is a legion of Obama supporters working always behind the scenes in Psy-Ops to bamboozle the blogosphere, but that’s precisely what’s going on .

TODAY’S TROLL DROPPING: . . .

What is the "LBGQT community?" What do they have in common except that they're all different from the majority, and in different ways? Since when does that make a "community?"

They are a little excitable at Hillbuzz. But, if they are what they say they are and the reaction to them has been what they relate, they have reason to be paranoid. The left is vicious when it comes to defectors.

Do you kow the secret behind FR.
Fr has a VAST audience of intelligent, thoughtful and yes Funny talented people.
The sites you mentioned are hate-filled depressing diatribes of tired ole Commie/Fascist/Socialist/dum jingoism.

Trolls don’t last on FR becuase of the above mentioned shortcomings.
Money doesn’t buy a brain.

If the economy collapses, and anarchy ensues, wait until the left sees how vicious the well armed right can be when protecting family and home.

Well yeah. Of course. But FR isn't the target. I post on many forums, forums not specifically political and those forums are what Sorosian Center for American Progress trolls target. They aren't after activists on the other side. No point.

Some of them, the "purist" and "concern" trolls, are quite good.

Great observation!

That also happens to our young college kids. They trust everyone (except their parents) and get swept into the orbit of professorial propagandists. There’s the residue of *respect for your elders* and that *prestige* thing.

I frankly love it when they come here, I want to debate people with different views, not listen to everyone validate everything I say.

We don’t want to be like them and kick everyone off we don’t agree with, only post from polls that we like, and ignore any opposing viewpoints. I think a simple *barf alert* is enough for controversial/propaganda articles.

It’s already grown tiresome. She made her intention known. It’s old news. She has since made NEW news. Where is the praise?

When posting two of Sarah’s major FB articles countering Obama’s state of the union speech, etc.this Pure

They resent it that Sarah isn’t going 3rd party.
The Pures would rather have Obama for a 2nd term then
Conservative Sarah Palin.
FR is loaded with these loons.

Point proven. All ideas are open for debate on freerepublic except for Palin. It doesn’t matter that I’d vote for if she got the nomination. It doesn’t matter that I think she’s probably the best of the field so far. Lets not even have a primary or even look for other candidates. To paraphrase Al Gore on global warming, “The 2012 GOP debate is over.”

Operatives who troll the internet don’t worry about posting stuff to existing threads. They tend toward provocative headlines, especially those that foment division. For example, the “Palin campaigning for McCain” headlines have been perfect for them. How stupid do you have to be to criticize Palin for being loyal to the guy who brought her to the nation’s attention and gave her the opporunity to be, as Vice President, a heartbeat away from the Presidency? And yet there have actually been arguments here about this! It’s embarrassing. The trolls succeed when that happens.

Look, questioning a candidate is not being anti that candidate. Before signing up, I was a lurker since 1998 or so, whenever Drudge still had a link to the site. If troll is defined as not yet 100% behind Palin then I must be a troll. Yesterday, on another forum, I was called a teabagger. Now I’m a troll. Split the difference and call it a trollbagger.

Regardless of my response, I usually like to take the opportunity to break out a few clever pictures to accompany my post.

There are a few that can be used to incite a troll,...

... and some that can have a subtle double meaning, which will go right over the heads of the less intelligent n00bs and trolls alike.

And there are some that are anything but subtle!

Hope that helps!

And welcome to FreeRepublic! (another useful troll detecting statement)

Not asking a question. Questioning her abilities. That is legal. I don’t think we asked enough questions about GWB and got a sort of wish-wash big govt guy who was good with defense and who cut taxes but not by much. I wonder if the other side regrets lining up so quickly behind Obama. I’m not comparing Obama to Palin by any means but let’s be sure.

" I once dared to ask a question about Sarah Palin and was also accused of being a troll."

Some of those supporting Mrs Palin share a like mindset with a lot of the birthers - an insistence that you agree with them totally and unconditionally. Deviate from this rule and you will find that you've stepped thru the looking glass and now find yourself in Wonderland. (Many Palin extremists are also birthers. No surprise there)

Extremists in any group, though usually a minority, are the most active and most vocal, as well as being, at worst, mentally unbalanced, at best, emotionally unbalanced.

The irony of this is that if you could have asked Palin herself your question she would have willingly and politely answered, not calling you a "troll". Assuming it's a reasonable query.
