New Mexico bill first step toward carbon storage

SANTA FE, N.M. – Rancher Jack Chatfield sees untapped value in the spaces that lie beneath New Mexico's dusty landscape. But he said the state needs to first decide who owns them.

Scientists are looking at underground fissures and caverns as places where carbon dioxide emissions captured from fossil fuel power plants can be stored. Carbon emissions are among the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. The underground space also could store compressed air as part of a process to generate clean electricity.

"This is a huge issue for our society today. It's technology that is on the cutting edge and if New Mexico blinks, we'll be left in the dust. Let's don't do that. Let's be ready," said Chatfield, who is leading an effort to settle the ownership of the underground spaces in the New Mexico Legislature.

The ownership of the spaces has become a hot topic across the West. Wyoming was the first state to tackle pore space ownership. Montana and North Dakota followed, and dozens of states — from Texas to Michigan — are considering legislation that would lay the groundwork for carbon capture and sequestration.

Are they gonna pump air in there? How does a power plant “capture” carbon dioxide?

They can store air in my basement for a few bucks.

Hurry, hurry, hurry!!!!

Since this obviously has nothing to do with science, we need to do with this idea what we need to do with everything that Obama wants to hurry with......FOLLOW THE MONEY!!

Who stands to profit and lose by this idiocy and why is this politician supporting them?

No, because if it isnt clearly defined, then someone will surely come out of that liberal cesspool of Santa Fe and allege that they have some claim to what is beneath the surface of your property if there is any profit in it for them. I think that this legislation will tie surface and subsurface rights together so that some bloody liberal wont be able to allege any rights below the surface of your property. But then, I’m getting repetitious, arent I?

Sorry about the double post. Problems with my ISP (satellite dish).

Also, I see that the proponent in this article is not necessarily a politician but a "rancher". Profit motive here?

The Bravo Dome in NE NM is already taken with NATURAL CO2!

For “carbon storage” there’s this wonderful, God-given technology known as plant life. For example, trees.

If only New Mexico had more rainfall, they could “install” (plant) millions more of these “carbon storage” systems, and do it above-ground, too!

This idea of trying to sequester carbon so that it is unavailable to living organisms sounds dangerous to me. Extremely dangerous.

Given that carbon dioxide levels have dropped drastically from thousands of ppm to 2 or 3 hundred ppm in the last few hundred thousand years, I’m concerned that the level of CO2 in the atmosphere is already nearing the lower limit of what plants can extract from the air.

Remove too much CO2 from the air, to below the concentration of what plants can extract, and plant life will die off until the CO2 reaches a higher concentration. Of course, with decreased plant life, not as much animal life can be supported.

When “global warming” was limited to the hysterical rantings of the far left, it was amusing. But now, “global warming” believers are starting to get dangerous. The idea of sequestering CO2 in an unusable form isn’t the only dangerous scheme, but it may be one of the most dangerous, if it can be acted upon.

Perhaps they could store carbon in Bill Richardson’s empty head.

Richardson’s already moving ahead to require inventories of greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas production, treatment and refining operations. Another reason why O&G production is going to suffer.

We need to elect a governor in November who is not under the thumb of the enviro-nazis and who will step back from this junk science as the “settled science” of global warming from man-made CO2 emissions becomes again unsettled.

Dear New Mexico Legislature,
I have come upon an innovative measure to capture the elusive and ever so destructive carbon molecule. I will reduce atmoshperic carbon dioxide by using natural products to store it. Please send me $500,000,000 for me to invest in these naturalistic storage mediums. Fully one half of the storage mediums can also be used to provide food for my family the masses, while the other half can be utilized in the summer time to prevent the suns rays from reaching my rooftop causing excess thermal heating in structures and thereby reducing the necessary energy required to cool my house these buildings.

Funding can be sent to my personal account research grant deparment via interfund transfer.
