National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admistration (NOAA) Administrator Dr. Jane Lubchenco has released the following statement:
An epic snowstorm has the mid-Atlantic region in its cross hairs. At this time, personal safety must be first and foremost. National Weather Service forecasters have been tracking this storm for the past week and now that the storm is here it must be taken very seriously.Chris Strong, Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) Office in Sterling, Va. just emailed CWG and other media outlets the following note:

The wuss factor here is something to behold.
So the DC area gets a lot of snow. So what? That’s what beer and snow shovels were made for. These folks need to put on their big girl panties and deal with it.
Absolutely I do. I have a big shovel that I like to call the Big Show (after the pro wrestler).
“Joe Bastardi”
Not a good name.
Honestly I never get that uptight about the storms unless power should go out.
Generally, we’re never stranded for long (1 day?) and even if power is out, it’s rarely that cold anyway. Nor is it that long.
Although BG&E isn’t what it once was.
The real concern is ice storms - which we had about a decade ago that wrecked power a good deal of the time (and a nightmare that was - my father had a major medical problem during it which included a huge ballooning leg, pain, and several trips to the hospital - blood clots). Then you know it’s cold, and the house will be too (including water pipes).
We just had a huge storm out here in Oklahoma and no one gave a darn. I could care less about you east coast wussies. Suck it up.
I’m in Waldorf. We’re all covered here now. At least 6” right now.
Yeah, the only winter weather events that put the power out in Mt. Airy that I know of were two ice events. The first one was in early 2007, when big pieces of crap (mixed snow, ice, and whatever) fell in abundance early one morning. It knocked my Mom’s power out for about 4 days. Then a minor ice storm hit in early 2008 and knocked my power out (I had bought the house from Mom) for a few hours. We have a woodstove, so it didn’t take long to remedy the cold problem.
I think both events happened in February, just like this event.
I checked about half an hour ago - 3 inches. Barely. And we're getting this sort of almost-frozen wetness in the form of almost a mist. Not really snow, not quite sleet or freezing rain.
Very strange.

More proof of Global Warming....
The storm that was on Fox alot? We were aware.
Thanks for your compassion.
Hey neighbor *waves* Bout an hour from you, I’d say we’ve got about 5-6 inches of snow. Right now it sounds like it’s raining ice pellets, I can hear it hitting the windows.
We’re from KY, so snow’s not a new thing to us. Went to Walmart yesterday morning and the liquor store yesterday so we’re well stocked in food and beer. Have had the same snow shovel for the last 6 yrs (though a careful inspection showed me that this is going to be its last storm before it goes to shovel heaven) If we HAVE to go anywhere (which we don’t, I’m a stay at home mom and my husband doesn’t work weekends anyway) we’ll just take the SUV. Plans are to stay home and relax.
This is the result of all the recent anti-global warming regulations, the massive reduction in CO2 emissions is causing global cooling and we are all doomed, the oceans aree going to freeze over and sea levels will drop 100 feet
The foot or more of global warming on my deck has just got to stop!
And, there’s more than 12 hours to go of this stuff!
(Southern NJ-on the map of 24” or more predicted)
Over a foot here in Northwestern Pa. on my deck as well. Drifting too.
Southwest PA getting blasted. Looked out my window and saw a big white blob that used to be my pick-up truck.
Old Ma Nature is squating down and taking a big ole dump on us.Good thing I got a case of PBR and snack.
Sat. Morning at 7:45am: This morning, it is all white outside here in The ‘Dorf (Waldorf)— I can see the top half of our two cars, but not much else. Haven’t seen a plow yet. This feels like the base of Mt. Everest.
I think there’s about 14-16” out there right now, and the snow is still falling and will continue to fall until about 6pm.
Global Warming, My Ass.
The “ambiance” out there looks like the Greenland expedition on “The Day After Tomorrow”... :-)
I just measured - 14”.
25” and still snowing hard here in WV.
