First Female Black POW Speaks Out in Book
cbs ^ | WASHINGTON, Feb. 3, 2010 | unknown

(AP) Shoshana Johnson survived gunshot wounds to both legs and 22 days as a prisoner of war in Iraq. Life wasn't so easy when she came home, either.

In a new book out this week, the 37-year-old single mother describes mental health problems related to her captivity and tells how it felt to play second fiddle in the media to fellow POW Jessica Lynch, who was captured in the same ambush.

"It was kind of hurtful," the former Army cook said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "If I'd been a petite, cutesy thing, it would've been different."

JouleZ doesn’t care about Johnson, she thinks that you were commenting on the GI that had Indian blood.

I think she is basically saying that Lynch received attention from the press that wasn't given to herself, and the others, because Lynch fit a template the media wanted for their coverage that wasn't met by the others.

Doesn't post 49 explain that though?

She is still just as dead. Get over yourselves. BTW, ansel12, your history is interesting. But, you are alive to defend your story. Congrats.

You need to read the thread, did you know about Miller?

Did you know about Walters?

Did you know that Johnson actually fired her rifle?

Did you know about Johnson’s and Miller’s reaction to the phony Lynch story?

I have been posting about the heroism of the soldiers.

It seems as if the reporters are highlighting her comments about receiving less attention. The woman wrote a book that surely must be about more than that. But, the reporters have everyone focusing on that one small part of the story - her feelings about some lack of attention.

I wonder, though... if any of the men who were captured had commented about the lack of attention given to them because they weren’t cute young girls, wouldn’t most people here agree with them?

All that said, Lynch herself was uncomfortable with the attention and the original story sold to the public. If I were in Shoshana’s shoes, I’d be glad to be the one not receiving much attention.

Of course she is dead, we don’t know why you brought her up in such a manner.

Are you interested in the other ones, how about that heroic Miller, or that heroic Walters, they were both awarded Silver Stars for heroism.

She is not dead. That's how she is narrating her story to the reporter and announcing her book.
I now have no idea who you are posting about.

Well, the guy in post 26 was killed so he can't speak but he may have been offended to learn that his heroics were given to a girl that never fired a shot.

Miller is still alive, and his comments about Lynch are in post 33. I agree with him, and although I think that Johnson's language is imperfect and a little off center, I sure get her point.

Did you even read posts 12, 20, 26, and 33? And please quit lecturing veterans on how we can post on military matters.

I agree that it was an insult to our brave military personnel. It isn’t the first insult they’ve gotten from inaccurate reporting, or being ignored by the media. It won’t be the last.

Many in the news business these days are interested in their story rather than an accurate journal of events.

The impression I got from much of what I’ve read here is that Johnson and others were frustrated by that, as well as the fact that Lynch was receiving credit that rightfully belonged to others. Perhaps it was particularly frustrating to them because they had tried to correct the inaccuracies to no avail.

I think I’ll wait for more info about Johnson’s book than what I got from this article to form an opinion about her and/or the book.
