Glenn Reynolds: Nashville Shows Tea Party Is America's Third Great Awakening
Washington Examiner ^ | February 7, 2010 | Glenn Harlan Reynolds

I attended this past weekend’s National Tea Party Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, and I came away feeling that I had seen something important. The Tea Party movement is part of something bigger: America’s Third Great Awakening.

America’s prior Great Awakenings, in the 18th and 19th Centuries, were religious in nature. Unimpressed with self-serving, ossified, and often corrupt religious institutions, Americans responded with a bottom-up reassertion of faith, and independence.

This time, it’s different. It’s not America’s churches and seminaries that are in trouble: It’s America’s politicians and parties. They’ve grown corrupt, venal, and out-of-touch with the values, and the people, that they’re supposed to represent. So the people, once again, are reasserting themselves.

Most of the attention focused on this weekend’s convention seemed to involve the keynote speaker, Sarah Palin. But though Palin wowed the crowd with red-meat attacks on overspending, weak national defense, and broken promises, the key phrase in her speech was this one: “All power is inherent in the people.”

And the biggest action item that she presented the crowd with wasn’t to support Sarah Palin, as most politicians would have asked, but to challenge incumbents in primary races. Primary battles aren’t “civil war,” she said. They’re the kind of competition that produces strength in the end.

This seemed to resonate with what I heard from conference attendees. Over and over again, I heard from Tea Party Activists that they were planning to take over their local Republican (and, sometimes Democratic) party apparatus starting at the precinct level and shake things up...

I beg to differ. America's churches need a third great awakening...arguably more than it's politics because if the churches revive that carries over to all areas of society.

uh no, America’s churches and seminaries are in trouble too...

I believe that that although not covered in the news—there is also a Christian revival brewing in the country as well...as a backlash against the theological liberalism, heretical beliefs, and corruption marring so many institutions which bear the name of Christ.

There is a true hunger for the Gospel in this country. I firmly believe that!

Can't come a moment too soon. Too many politicians think "limited government" is only for bashing the opposition when out of power, not for enacting when in power.

Gee that Sarah Palin is so stupid and inexperienced. There, I pretended I am a MSM journalist. The Barracuda is circling folks, beware, when she strikes her prey will be seriously damaged. This year she will focus on big topics and support selected candidates. Next year the knives will come out for the kenyan kid. Too bad for him, no more filibuster proof Senate and no coat tails leaves bammy pretty well neutered.

The Tea Party should function as a political PAC.

They should support the most conservative candidates in ANY election - general and primary and that includes the Rat Party.

By supporting the most CONSERVATIVE Democrat in their OWN party in primaries, that will eventually drive the Democrats and political thinking nationwide further to the right.

Of course, in a GENERAL election, they should support the most conservative candidates, which, right now, are mainly Republicans.

BUT, given a really conservative Democrat versus a Lindsey Graham, Olympia Snowe or John McCain, I think most people here would vote for the conservative Democrat.

I have seen hints at this, but I live in WA state, not exactly a typical hotbed of Christian activity. But I have found real and solid teaching in the medium and smaller sized churches.

I have heard Mark Driscoll has had great success with his ministry at Mars Hill Church in Seattle?

... or (where they exist) Constitution Party candidates.

I think this Great Awakening will be a combined Religious and Political Awakening. It will result in renewed commitment to the Constitution of our forefathers combined with the explicit recognition that America is a Christian nation. It will result in the end of legal abortions, stem cell research, open homosexual activity and other non-Christian beliefs and actions, no more government interference in Christian churches and activities, and a Crusade by America to spread democracy and religious freedom throughout the world.

I like this thread, but our Freeper friends are going to have to toughen up a lot if they are going to use Tea Party resources to promote conservative candidates in Democratic primaries.

I have suggested that before, because I think that is the best way to take the country in a more conservative direction. Generally, however, I think that the passionate partisans of our community are going to choke over sending any money to Democrats.

We aren’t even comfortable with folks from our own cyber community who support Republican candidates with less than consistent records.

It takes a pretty manipulative weasel (like me) to advocate support for a candidate from an opposing party because you think that that person will do more to advance the agenda of your own party than your own like-minded candidates.

Yeah... too complicated... sorry! Back to the point, we need some Democrat support if the tea party movement is going to achieve anything significant, much less start an “awakening” or a “revolution.”

Uh...yes, they are also in trouble.

In fact, an argument could be made that they are at the root of the political trouble we see these days.

Well I don't hear any objections, so feel free to do so.

No, I specifically mentioned religious freedom. Non-Chistians will be tolerated in America as they alwys have been. But, we need Explicit recognaition that America is a Chrisian Nation, founded on Christian principes and governed in accordance with those principles.

According to our founders, this nation was NOT founded on Christian principles

Specifically the Treaty of Tripoli of 1797

http://quarkscrew.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/treatytripoli.gif

Read Article 11 in particular

As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion;”

Because the Senate approved the treaty doesn’t mean it was correct.

In 1798, the Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Act which made the publishing of false and malicious writings against the government or government officials a crime. According to your reasoning, that proves the founders opposed free speech.

Let me know the day the Treaty of Tripoli is over turned and found unconstitutional

The Treaty of Tripoli follows our Constitution to a T.
