Marvel admits to 'mistake' in controversial Captain America comic (Based On Free Republic Sign)

A sign created by a poster at Free Republic, and then recreated in a Captain America comic, has led Marvel to admit a mistake.

*updated

"It looks like Marvel Comic's Captain America is throwing his mighty shield at the Tea Party Movement. Warner Todd Huston wrote on his Publius forum blog that the super-powered soldier who fought the Nazis in WWII observes with disdain Americans who are seemingly compared to Tea Party Movement protesters of today:

"In preparation for the infiltration, Marvel Comics depicts the two super heroes out of costume and observing from a rooftop a street filled with what can only be described as a Tea Party protest. The scene shows crowds of people in city streets carrying signs that say, “stop the socialists,” “tea bag libs before they tea bag you,”and “no to new taxes.” Naturally, the people in these crowds are depicted as being filled with nothing but white folks.

--snip---

"According to to Mr. Quesada, the book was ready to go to printer, but the panel in question had a group of protesters handling signs with no words on them, so the editor asked the letterer to "fudge in" some quick believable slogans at the last minute. The letterer referred to this sign as a sample to work from.

‘Great idea! Holding a sign that says “I’m Captain AMERICA, where else would I be?”’

Have it written on his hand so when he goes to shake the Palinator’s hand all of the press will get great photos of it!

Chickenhawk was also a homosexual term that was used to slur the supporters of the war in Iraq. It means a man that preys on boys.

Well, to be honest, just how many weekly comics can you get from that? I’m thinking maybe 20-30 weeklies before it runs stale.

he was one of the worst writers....and his Franken and Davis skits were embarrassingly insipid.

wow, I didn’t know about all that -— makes me feel so “out of it” but maybe in a good way!

I’ve heard/seen the expression “tea bagger” used with vehemence and derision by liberals recently but I had no idea it had anything other than the obvious political meaning

so aren’t liberals supposed to LOVE “tea baggers”???

how can they turn the expression into such a perjorative?? :^)

It’s the same as when Arsenio used to say Rush was gay to the audience’s delight. And? So? Isn’t that a plus?

Amazes me that performers, artists, all the way up news and entertainment companies continue to Dixie-Chick themselves into oblivion.

Same way that they now tell kids that saying "That's so GAY" is "hurtful" and they should "knock it off." Hey, "gay" is THEIR term — they appropriated it in the first place — to replace other "hurtful" terms, I might point out.

It's like this: if you take a fine china pitcher and use it to carry raw sewage, guess what? It becomes a sewage container.

Tea bag is derogative

The origin of the term "Tory", meaning a member of the Conservative Party in the UK, is the Irish word tóraidhe, or outlaw. Being an Irish term, it also implied, in 17th Century England, that a Tory was a crypto Roman Catholic. The "Whig" of both the UK and American Whig parties came from "whiggamore" or cattle driver. Both parties eventually adopted for themselves a label that had begun as a term of abuse.

I'm less ruffled by tea bag than some (sticks and stones) but the examples you cite are quite different from an explicit pornographic reference.

Always glad to help the comic strip guys out!

Remember when Captain America fought Nazi’s, not Americans. Remember when Tony Stark fought Communists in Viet Nam, not renegade American businessmen. Remember when America was portrayed as the morally upright country founded on freedom for you. Oh how the times ( or owners of the comix) have changed.

Oh, I can do better than that:
