There'll be little room for history in Anderson Cooper's new home.
Before he bought his century-old firehouse in Greenwich Village, bronze plaques honoring members of Fire Patrol 2 who died in the line of duty -- including on 9/11 -- were stripped from the building to make it easier to sell.
The plaques were rescued from a pile of trash by Arnie Roma, whose son, Keith, a member of the fire patrol that worked out of the building, died on Sept. 11, 2001, rescuing people from the World Trade Center. A plaque in his son's honor graced the firehouse's facade.
"If you want, come up here and get them because we don't know what to do with them," Roma said he was told by the insurance group. "They were laying in a corner with dust and garbage all around them."
The four plaques that once hung at the firehouse had been pulled down and removed by the building's former owners, fearful that the presence of the historic plaques might have made Cooper reluctant to buy the building, Roma said.
The board sold the firehouse to Cooper for $4.3 million late last year. The CNN newsman is now renovating it into a home.

Those are some pretty big plaques. I’m not sure I would want four of them on my home.
They should be moved to another fire station or some kind of monument site.

God forbid he would encounter the names of real heroes.
Nothing in the article suggests that Anderson Vanderbilt Cooper had anything to do with, or any knowledge of, removing these plaques.
The story is completely misleading. It was the building’s former owners who had the plaques removed, not Cooper.

I’m sure for that price Cooper thought that those hunky firemen came with the building!!
In fact, since he bought a firehouse and is keeping the facade as a firehouse, I would imagine he would have rather had the memorial plaques, if only for kitschy interior decorating reasons.
If the people who wanted the plaques got them, then it looks like a happy ending. The firehouse had been a public building and now it is going to be a private home, so it’s not as though just anyone could visit to view the plaques.
If I was doing this, I would ask relatives of the honorees if they would want the plaques. Something like this is too serious for kitsch.
I wonder who his firehouse mate will be when they go sliding down the pole together.
Cooper’s not worried about the plaques. He’s worried about the hose.

I agree, they should be respectfully treated. And it was the previous owner's fault that they weren't, not Cooper's.
The last fireman out the door should have taken them with him.

They’re idiots. I’m guessing the fire museum back there, for one, would have been more than happy to take those plaques in.
Okay, they didn’t throw them away. I still think they could have found a better place to store them.
Pretty sure Anderson already has experience sliding down poles.
