Posted on 02/12/2010 5:03:52 PM PST by max americana
Three-quarters of Americans say that they support openly gay people serving in the U.S. military, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll, a finding that could lend momentum to the Obama administration's effort to dismantle the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell."
President Obama called for the policy's repeal last month in his State of the Union address, and the military's top civilian and military leadership has also expressed personal support for a repeal.
The percentage of Americans who say they support gays openly serving is the same as a Post-ABC News poll found in July 2008; both are far above the 44 percent who said so in May 1993.
In the new poll, majorities across party lines favor such a policy, with support among Democrats (82 percent) and independents (77 percent) higher than among Republicans (64 percent). The poll also reveals several sharp demographic divides. Men (65 percent) and seniors (69 percent) are far less likely than are women (84 percent) and young adults (81 percent under age 30) to say that gays should be allowed to serve if they have disclosed their sexual orientation. Knowing a gay person makes a big difference: Among those who say they have a gay friend or family member, 81 percent support allowing gay people to serve openly, compared with 66 percent who say they do not know someone who is gay.
The poll was conducted by telephone Feb. 4-8 among a random national sample of 1,004 adults, including users of both conventional and cellular phones. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.

It may not be 75%, but I bet it’s a majority.
How many polled had prior military service??
as per article, none.
“The poll was conducted by telephone Feb. 4-8 among a random national sample of 1,004 adults...”
How about polling the people it really affects - soldiers?
I’m not gay and I never served, my beret is off to anyone who volunteers to serve. ;(
“serve openly”. I guess, gay first, soldier second.
Would you be interested in inviting a few of these homosexual sailors over to your house to share a shower with you? :-)
You are probably correct.
Dumb headline “refinement.”
Polls have always been liberally slanted, but it’s getting ridiculous now. Is there a “Poll Slanting Czar” in the White House now?
Ask those serving (not the Pampered Purple Princes at the Pentagon) and you’ll get a resounding NO! Those are the voices on this issue that count.
With the mass layoffs, cost cutting and everything, why waste manpower, time and money on polling, why not just skip the process and make up the desired results.
That is exactly what the MSM are doing...
So this means that 75% of Freepers are for this? I dont think so.
I see a base housing quagmire on the horizon.. Straight quarters, Homosexual quarters, Lesbian quarters.. Bisexual quarters (uh oh.. What to do?).. WTF is this country coming to?
Maybe Adm. Mullen would like it....I hate the phony conservatives who on one hand say they are 100% pro military then go and support queerification of the same military. GTH phony's....Krauthammer is a phony too...
So what? Just proves 3/4 of those in this survey are wrong. The majority of 08 voters voted for Barack and were wrong. Happens all the time the majority is wrong.
I don’t base right and wrong on what the majority says. The majority CAN be right, but just having more people be for something doesn’t automatically make it right.
This is about the fourth or fifth poll I’ve seen recently that show a significant majority of people that think it’s okay for gays to serve openly in the military, but I still don’t buy it - especially not 75%. I think someone is cooking the numbers.
Who cares? Shouldn’t it be a vote of the active military? They are the ones that have to work with them and keep everything going.
And, in the final result, they are the one’s who will have the real vote (with their feet).
I would guess that among those now serving and those with a “propensity to serve” the negative vote would be as high as 90-95%.
This is a problem with us on FreeRepublic. When a poll or story doesn’t allign with our view, we quickly claim bias. Why not just recognize that the public, as whole that don’t pay attention to issues like we do, go with the flow and need to be educated? No, this poll/story isn’t biased; the public are just uneducated. Denial doesn’t solve anything; recognizing that the public are misinformed what gays in the military will do and then educating them is the only way to solve the problem.
As a soldier currently stationed at Fort Carson: most don't care about openly gay soldiers. But when I pose the problem with housing, marriage rights, fraternization, BAH and BAS, the politically correct actions of ending our "fag jokes," and other issues this leads to, most don't want to rock the boat and favor the current policy in effect.
At one time a huge majority thought slavery and beating your wife was ok too. It means nothing to me. The military’s job is to defend us and kill bad people if they have to. Nothing should come before the mission. That used to be the slogan.
Forcing men to live and work together, when one of them likes to ram his thing in another man’s butt, is just stupid.
Anyone ever see the movie “The Lives of Others”?
When I see polls like this, I feel like the Stasi guy watching the state propaganda evening news.
I appreciate your input as one who is in the best position to know...and thank you for your service.
Military Times did. 49% of active duty service members support letting gays serve openly. This is up from 42% in 2008 which was up from 37% in 2003.
Why is this number rising? Well, I suspect that today's young recruits are much more, for lack of a better word, "indoctrinated" into acceptance of gay lifestyles. They went to school where they had friends and acquaintances who were openly gay and where tolerance was drummed into their heads by teachers and peer pressure. They've had family members come out as openly gay. If they had civilian jobs prior to enlisting, they likely had openly gay co-workers and worked for companies with established anti-discrimination policies, companies they'll return to after the service.
Eventually, as polls are trending, opposition to openly gays serving among active duty military will be the minority opinion.
I served 5 years active duty USAF and 2 years Ohio ANG.
My vote is NO.
I’d bet my last nickel that all of the men I served with would vote NO too. That is 100%! I can’t believe the 75% number, unless 50% of those are queers. (I hate the usurpation of the otherwise nice word, “gay”.)
That’s right, the American people, like Pavlov’s dogs, have been conditioned to accept this “human rights” policy, and their minds won’t be changed, for they are an uninformed and stubborn lot.
Maybe you should re-phrase that.
My cousin serves in Sokor and months ago, I asked him about gays in the military, and all of them in his bn were and are against it.
I think the career military folks have already said allowing gays to serve openly will decimate the services of experienced personnel. The Progressives have their minds made up about allowing gays to serve openly regardless of the outcome. Isn’t curious how all the Progressives refer to Tea Party people as tea baggers when they are the ones in bed (not literally....I think) with all the sexually confused people.
Effin homos are worse than vampires.
Gays will vote dim no matter what so maybe, just maybe the GOP could support what’s actually best for the mission of the military?
I’m just sayin’.

A nonsense poll, of course.
I’m serving active duty, and I honestly don’t care. They’re already in all branches of the military serving honorably and shedding the same blood as the rest of us. The same regulations that apply to us regarding fraternization, displays of public affection, etc. would still apply to them. Meaning they leave that crap at home. That’s not to say issues and problems wouldn’t accompany this, but it won’t destroy the military.
Not in this economy.
And in the event of a draft, being gay will not disqualify you anymore. So suppose a major war starts and the experienced people have been thinned out a lot. A lot of gays will be drafted and put in the ranks and face hostile fire. And they will be slaughtered in large numbers (along with straights).
Maybe that is the plan...
Really? How so?
Only 75 percent? They’re losing their push-poll data manipulation magic touch. I bet if they go back and try harder they can push the number to 105 percent.
Most of whom have no idea what it’s like to be in the military.
Pure bull____. The regs would be charged to give them special status as an "oppressed" minority, all you dewy-eyed idiots who see no harm in this would spend 80 hours a year being indoctrinated into "accepting" the alternative lifestyles, and you'd get your unprogessive a__es kicked out in a heartbeat if you didn't shout kumbaya and join the lavender parade.
“Meaning they leave that crap at home”
It really doesn’t ever work like that in the real world.
I wonder what percentage of the population would vote to have themselves share an open shower with homosexuals? It’s really nice of them to choose that for the brave young men and women who have volunteered to protect this country.
If they decide to act unprofessionally and flaunt their sexuality at work, holding hands and kissing each other and stuff, it’ll stop pretty quick when they start getting busted down, restricted pay, restricted to quarters, extra duty, etc.
