HUNTSVILLE, AL -- A biology professor is in custody in connection with three fatal shootings on the University of Alabama in Huntsville campus Friday afternoon, according to a UAH official.
Dr. Amy Bishop, a Harvard-University trained neuroscientist, was taken into custody, and her husband has been detained. They have not been charged with a crime.
According to police, three people were killed and three were wounded when the shooter opened fire during a biology faculty meeting on the third floor of the Shelby Center for Science and Technology. The three injured people are being treated at Huntsville Hospital.
In June 2006, The Times published a story involving Bishop, biology professor and her husband, Jim Anderson, chief science officer of Cherokee Labsystems in Huntsville.
Bishop is quoted in the story as co-inventor of "InQ," a new cell growth incubator which promised to cut the costs, size and maintenance involved in the mechanics of cell generation.

Maybe she believed the press when they suggested that “professor” was a code word for racism. < /sarc >
FYI, I live on the outskirts of Huntsville and know several students.
This professor has had run-ins with the university president over a new proposal to require Freshmen and Sophomores to live on campus. It was not a popular decision among locals who send their kids there.
The ‘good professor’ led a movement to censure the UAH president. Needless to say, she wasn’t getting tenure. Period.
Information tonight is that she found out this morning that she was denied. Later this afternoon they had a staff meeeting and she shot them in the staff meeting.
She’ll be put to death.
Thanks for the comprehensive update.
More info from a well placed source in the faculty.
Bishop was one of only a handful of people who didn’t get tenure on the last cycle, and one of two women.
The new provost is Indian and is a jerk, and a chauvinist to boot. Bishop actually had a great research and academic record, very accomplished researcher with some patents. But she was denied tenure and the provost acted very badly towards her, in part because she was one of the ones leading the charge against freshmen residency requirements on campus (big financial deal to the new president and his adminsistration). Widely held rumor on campus that her tenure was denied because of 1) her activity in the faculty senate badmouthing the new president/provost, and 2) because she was a woman.
Furthermore, she appealed the tenure decision and made some very loud and visible waves in doing so, which probably hurt more than it helped. Along the way she disparaged some of her own department faculty members. When her appeal came up, her own department reportedly undercut what little chance she should have had.
Bishop met with the provost earlier today and go the news that her tenure appeal had been denied (this was months under review, unduly long and she had been pressuring them for an answer.) When it came back negative, she want ballistic and showed up at the Biology department staff meeting and you know most of the rest.
Tried to escape the building but was caught trying to leave the scene. The survivors in the faculty department conference room called 911 and the campus police arrived at Shelby Hall in less than 90 seconds, very good work by them to catch her and clear the bldg.
Why cap anyone?
I’d rather you take our votes away and leave us our guns...liberal nannys are what has sent this country down the tubes...Agree with Ann Coulter on this one.
BTW,
How many people received tenure?
What percentage were men/women?
How many were turned down?
Perhaps this professor should have understood her lane and not involved herself in policy that did not impact her classroom. The marketplace would have determined whether the residence requirement was a good business decision.
Her trial would air out many dirty laundries at the university and even at the biology department. They are in big trouble now.
This particular situation does not indicate the need for firearms to "settle up".
Hmmm, that jibes with some of the comments at the Huntsville Times story. One wrote that the President instituted the live-on-campus requirement to coverup the fact that he had overbuilt student housing hugely. This is apparently a commuter school for the most part.
Other comments from those who had studied under her pegged her as an unstable, paranoid personality.
Ah well. Can’t wait for the TV movie to come out, or at least the Law & Order episode.
I think there are a lot of stupid female voters and they are all democrats....
THe new President is not that bad a guy. UAH is a unique university. It has co-located office and labs with Marshall Space Flight Center.
Also has some co-located offices with the National Weather Service.
HUGE research university. Tht lead to it having a VERY international feel to the faculty.
The president at the main campus in Tuscaloosa instituted a new freshman-live-on-campu rule, citing studies and statistics. He has done a FABULOUS job in Tuscaloosa, increasing enrollment and academic standing.
THe UAH President is trying to emulate that same success, but has not been nearly as good at it. Since UAH has a VERY large “commuter” enrollment (with NASA and the Army Missle Command both being in town), the Freshman housing rule was playing very poorly.
Huntsville is a unique place. The actions taken by the professor (prior to the shooting) don’t fit into the norm here at all. UAH is very research oriented and faculty getting into social arguments is out of place.
My friend has worked on Wall Street as a bond trading assistant and as an administrative assistant on a college campus.
She said the corruption on Wall Street pales in comparison.
Killer chick....will she get off like they often do?
maybe someone made her wear white patent leather heels to bed?
It’s interesting to look at photos of the dead professors.
If anything it should be the opposite.
I have two daughters in college...schools go ape over being a woman, black, latino or anything but white male...anyone thinks becasue the courts say affirmative action is over it's really hasn't experienced what all of this is really like from undergrad admissions to medical school quotas-scholarships
reams of slots open and money both private and otherwise to help girls go to college and colleges are notorious as PC gut bombs
just wondering...I'm only in Nashville but everyting in our culture is geared to ginving women all access and specialo treatment....the upcoming Daytona is proof enough of that
That is probably just an excuse. Huntsville is very politically correct as far as hiring women and minorities.
I can see a BIG rub with some of the foreign professors they get in here, though. Very possible that they clashed. But, playing it smart and by the book would get around that. No need to shoot anyone.
