You know, it always amazes me that FR lets you forget something when posting! Here’s the link:

When Pelosi and Reed got their super majorities they figured that they could force anything they wanted down the public’s throat. Happily they were wrong. Having to call a meaningless conference then game the system to get the legislation passed spotlights the ineptitude of the Congressional Democrats.

Where were all the complaints when Democrat controlled Congress was purposefully not passing legislation until GWB would be out of office? I guess it was OK then.

Sen. Tom Harkin has some other numbers in mind: 57, 54, down to simple majority in a 100-member Senate. The Iowa Democrat has reprised his proposal to change the Senate's filibuster rule.

But these people are so predictable. A couple years from now when the Democrats are in the minority, they will do a 180 and start talking about how the filibuster is part of the Constitution and the evil Republicans want to do away with the Constitution etc. No one in the MSM will point out their hypocrisy.

If they could, they would pass a law that officially reinstates the filibuster every time the Democrats lose the Senate, and suspends it every time the Democrats are in the majority. MSM editorialists would praise the measure as "a prudent example of democracy in action."

“Blame that magic number: 60. “

don’t worry, that will change in November.

“Congress is paralyzed ... Yippee”

Let’s put it this way. There’s nothing urgent about improving the way our citiens receive their health care. We can afford to take the time to bring citizens into understanding and agreement on proposed ideas. Health care cost reduction can made part the financial reform and economic recovery discussions.

Congress is not failing to pass healthcare. Instead, it is succeeding by not passing the current healthcare package.

the whole reason there is such a divide is that the bills introduced serve one group and punish another. The bills themselves are that divisive. If only one bill got passed every 2 years because of gridlock, is that a BAD thing?

Bills that serve ALL of the people and satisfied BOTH parties would pass without issue. Isn't that what this is all about... protecting the minority so that they are not dictated to by the majority?

I often hear people claim "majority rules". The fact is, our system is designed to protect the suppressed group and ensure their rights are preserved .. the majority would never dissolve their own, it is the minority that needs such leeway and protection.

This madness must stop. I think the vote should be raised back to 67. This will ensure even more that groups are not trampled on. Write responsible legislation and 67 isn't a problem.

Good.

Amen!

When the recent weather event shut down D.C. for several days, the rest of the nation breathed a sigh of relief.

Too bad it didn't last and isn't permanent.

Bitter partisan rancor and division have increased in both houses of Congress after each election since 2004. Why? There have been more Democrats after each election since 2004.

Democrats control the House, Senate, and the White House and Slow Joe Biden says Washington is broken. The American people say Duh!

There will be no Seante rule change because that takes 67 votes and with only 56 democrats (one who is in the hospital and unable to vote) there is no way it will happen. They can fantasize all they want, it is not going to happen.

I agree and would bet that our founders did that on purpose because it would keep them from changing things too much.

Built into the Senate by the Founding Fathers is fear of a tyranny of the majority.

The Founding Fathers, if you will recall, intended the Senate to be populated by Senators elected by state legislatures, not directly by the electorate. So, if you want to bring the Founding Fathers into the debate over the filibuster, then return the Senate to what the Founding Fathers created before tinkering with the rules of the Senate.

While the 17th was a great populist idea intended make it more difficult to corrupt Senators, it hasn't worked out any better than prohibition. Rather than being less corruptible, most Senators are now always in DC, many are completely out of touch with the people in their state, and it's even easier to corrupt Senators so inclined because they're beholden to national interests first rather than state interests first. It's no wonder that the 10th Amendment is so often ignored when the Senate is populated by members who look down on their state legislatures rather than having to stay attuned to them.

You can't very well say you're trying to do what the Founding Fathers intended in the way of debate in the Senate when you've already destroyed the Senate they intended. With the Senate already drastically altered from the form our forefathers intended, returning to 67 votes is the better idea than any further erosion rights of the minority. Regards

This country is much better off when congress is not in session. I pray congress will stay paralyzed. All of the legislation supposedly on their plates is not what most Americans want - just fascist/marxist progressives.

“Congress is paralyzed.”

Then how the heck did they spend $4 trillion last year?!?!?

Who buys this garbage? Do they just make stuff up to justify the failures of the Democrat majority in Congress?

“The Tyranny of the Minority in the U.S. Senate “

“The Tyranny of the Minority” rest on the assert that the majority have the right to impose what ever they want upon the minority.

“Most citizens, however, don’t elect senators with the thought in mind, ‘OK, that’ll make sure nothing gets done.’”
Most citizens elect their senators and reps to represent their states and their individual interest in congress.

If they have a vested interest in seeing to it that nothing gets done with regard to a particularly bill such as the American people overwhelmingly do with regard to the health-care bill.
Then yes WE DO EXPECT OUR Representatives to insure that nothing gets done!

Clearly Congress is not sufficiently “paralyzed” to avoid threating our liberty and dept.
