[September 8, 2009] 'We're pinned down:' 4 U.S. Marines die in Afghan ambush

GANJGAL, Afghanistan — We walked into a trap, a killing zone of relentless gunfire and rocket barrages from Afghan insurgents hidden in the mountainsides and in a fortress-like village where women and children were replenishing their ammunition.

"We will do to you what we did to the Russians," the insurgent's leader boasted over the radio, referring to the failure of Soviet troops to capture Ganjgal during the 1979-89 Soviet occupation.

Dashing from boulder to boulder, diving into trenches and ducking behind stone walls as the insurgents maneuvered to outflank us, we waited more than an hour for U.S. helicopters to arrive, despite earlier assurances that air cover would be five minutes away.

Sounds to me that we didn’t get the close air support, based on what little is here.

Send obozo to go fight under his rules of engagement!

That will be a good way to get rid of the sorry POS!

It is foolish to even think of but either turn the damn place to glass or get out and let them have it...until things change in the crapitol were and our boys are screwed either way.

God Bless them.

The officers in charge? Names? Who were the officers in charge that wanted to be promoted instead of saving our brothers?

Who and what the f#$@ kind of ROE are we following that makes tactical planning IMPOSSIBLE. You put men in position to either have adequate firepower, cover or support. So the unit commander was given his orders and then CUT LOOSE.

The blood of every one of those Marines in on the hands of the OFFICERS that wanted their PC merit badge and didn't lift d#ck to help.

I wish we had audio of the whole engagement and stuck those POS in a room and played it over and over again. What a waste, a waste of fine men in order for the officers to punch their ticket that they served in a FAO and then bolt to the rear so that they can get staff positions for the Pentagon gravy train.

I hope they enjoy their meals, their vacations with family, growing old, celebrating holidays, and raising kids.... cause the 4 Marines they cut loose died helping each other and fighting in a far away sh#t hole of a place in order for us to sleep soundly.

God Bless them and I pray that their families know how many here honor these men as heroes. I could barely keep my fist out of my monitor when I read this, thing.

My son will be heading to Afghanistan sometime later this year - I seriously fear for his life. The ROE the Obozo administration has forced upon our soldiers is criminal.

Wonder when it will become like Nam where officers rotated in and out of country just to get being in a combat zone in their files - and maybe a medal or two?
