Pentagon to Allow Women to Serve Aboard Navy Submarines

The Pentagon will lift a decades-old policy that prohibits women from serving aboard Navy submarines.

WASHINGTON -- The Pentagon has moved to lift a decades-old policy that prohibits women from serving aboard Navy submarines, part of a gradual reconsideration of women's roles in a military fighting two wars whose front lines can be anywhere.

At issue is the end of a policy that kept women from serving aboard the last type of ship off-limits to them. The thinking was that the close quarters aboard subs would make coed service difficult to manage.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates notified Congress in a letter signed Friday that the Navy intends to repeal the ban on women sailors on subs. Congress has 30 days to weigh in.

Once again the issue of "fairness" is raised as a reason to change military policy. No one who supports this of course explains how this change will make the Navy better at what it does.

I would think of all the worst things that happened to the past couple of generations of Americans is the instilling of the idea that everything, no matter how inherently or unalterably unfair, must be made to be fair, no matter what the costs.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and guess that no US sub has the extra room for a maternity ward and day care center either.

Those are the people who control politics from both sides, folks. Let ‘em do their thing, but don’t help ‘em with it. And survive. Most of the rest of you are going to lose your jobs. Realize that first. Avoid unnecessary personal expenses. Become more self-sufficient. Start a hobby of making something useful (not little pretties, “crafts,” etc.). ...something like steel castings, parts, tools, food, clothing, etc.

Wow....another bad idea..... go have junior born on board before the tour is over.

Just wait - the XO or someone will have to give up their cabin; the space will be needed for a Lactation Room. Can't you just see that written on the bulkhead in military stencil?

Maybe Big Sis can clarify the type of female expected to qualify for the service.

It will certainly give the term, hot bunking, a new meaning

For those that don't know, hot bunking is one rack (bed) being shared. One works and the other sleeps... swap.

I can only hope she will overlap the "sleeping/working" part, For moral ya know :-)

Seriously,,, does she sleep with the crew or have a private room (that does not exist) like the Captain?

I agree it’s not a good idea. Perhaps they’ll just have an all female crew.

The "Seaman Hornsby / pig boats" scene from Operation Petticoat springs immediately to mind.

Perhaps they’ll just have an all female crew.

That was under consideration during the final year of George W. Bush's presidency. The Navy was considering an all-female crew for a Los Angeles-class attack boat. Maybe more than one, but an article linked here earlier today even identified the CO of the first all-female SSN.

The plan was to be implemented by 2009; I can only assume that it was postponed or the Navy reconsidered. You can bet that if they'd moved forward with that plan, it would've been in ALL the papers.

I wonder how many bubbleheads were involved in this decision making process. My guess is none.

This is an absolute disaster in the making. It will do NOTHING to improve the war fighting readiness of US submarines, and statistics in fact PROVE that the opposite has occurred on all other co-ed sea going platforms. What then is the point? This is obviously PC BS!!

One guaranteed result of this is that there will be an exodus of highly qualified extremely competent submariners from the force. Submarine life is incredibly stressful as it is. This decision will force many good men to simply leave, rather than tolerate such an increase in hostility and antagonism. It’s a cost/benefit calculation....and many will just come to the conclusion that it’s simply not worth it anymore.

BTW...the idea that we can correct human nature and biology by fiat is a purely socialistic and insane one.

I've heard that when a group of Women are together in a confined space for a period (pardon the pun) of time, their Menstrual Cycles synchronize.

If that's true, the Ruskies and Chicoms had better hope they don't start trouble during the wrong time of the month.

When I was in the sandbox I can recall becoming so sensitive to females, due to a lack of sexual activity, that I could walk past various sleeping quarters (aka hooches) and tell there was a female inside just from my raw senses. I could literally smell them and I don’t mean their perfume. Human sexual desire doesn’t go away in a warzone or in a pressurized can under the ocean. Bad idea...

So, does this mean women on subs will “go down”?

I can’t believe I said that!
