13 Republicans cross the aisle as Senate OKs jobs bill

Reporting from Washington - The Senate on Wednesday passed a jobs bill that one senator described as "modest," but one that Democrats hope will be the first in a series of attempts to jump-start hiring nationwide. More notable, perhaps, than the bill itself was the fact that 13 Republicans crossed party lines to vote for it. The $15-billion bill passed by a 70-28 tally. The bill would grant employers a "holiday" on their 6.2% Social Security payroll contribution for every new employee hired through the rest of the year, as long as that employee has been out of work for at least 60 days. It would also make it easier for businesses to write off equipment purchases and would extend federal highway and mass-transit funding programs. "For the first time in a long time we have a bill that is supported by both Democrats and Republicans," said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said shortly before the vote, but he cautioned, "This is not a magic wand that is going to be waved and all our joblessness will decline." White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said the vote proved that bipartisanship in the Senate is "possible." It also marked a victory for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who has seen his chamber paralyzed by partisan warfare. Reid pushed for the vote counting on some GOP support and was rewarded earlier this week when several Republicans, including the newest senator, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, signed on...

“At least my two Alabama senators voted NO!”

####

Stolid, reliably conservative, Sweet Home Alabama is currently among the sanest of the states.

and Kit Bond can take McCaskill with him. He also proposed legislation which would allow international adoptions to be made easier. Thank God he is retiring.

Last poll I saw said that it was the most conservative state in the union. Our state rep recently died. He was a dim. We just voted in a new rep and we got a republican conservative in office now in his place. One by one we are making changes.

this was bail out stimulus bill but this time the rats called the jobs bill and the GOP never had the balls to stand up to them again

just for once for crying out loud will the GOP stand up and speak up with a voice and say what is really going on and get their message out.

When Bush spoke the cameras always went to Pelosi and Reid for their take on what Bush said.

when the rats speak or the white house speaks the GOP stays silent, for crying out loud they can't even mention about the homosexual agenda even though the majority of thew country are against it .

this was stimulus and the rats got away with their wording again

anyways, his coments about his daughters being available
his comments he is proud of posing for cosmo
his daughters can pose nude since he did

what a loser

don’t get me started on the useless TSA.

a bunch of useless idiots where one TSA worker actually stops and searches a nun .
WTH is that about a muslims stopping and searching a nun and we wonder why we’re in the crap .

there’s a photo of it which gets my blood boiling.

As for them now becoming more professional , well how?
It is the same people who are now getting paid more with better vacations and health.

I’ll stop there about the TSA before my blood pressure goes up , talking about a bunch of fools doing that job , well trying to do the job and they couldn’t even pass a third grade test let alone work at an airport.

Yeah, and some Freeps are condemning Glenn B for the CPAC speech. It shouldn’t take a ton of bricks to fall on someone to realize something’s wrong.

Yep, that’s the way it seems to me. You won’t have to spend time and money training them either like you would a new employee.

This was probably a good idea. It’s not much money (in the scheme of trillion dollar budgets) and it lets them show they can be bipartisan. Ammo for the bigger battle.

Thank you, Senator Vitter, for voting against.

As for your “yea” vote, Senator Landrieu, the sooner you leave the Senate, the better.

And, of course, among the dems, here in Virginia, our Weebles — Webb and Warner — reflexively and predictably voted “yes” to support their Dear Leader.

You bet. Those two have to check in with Reid everytime they wipe their butts to see if it's OK. Absolute waste of oxygen.

Why is everyone slamming Scott Brown over this? He did what he had to do: throw a bone to MA moderates. What better bill to do it on than on a measly $15 bil. one which was going to pass cloture anyway with Snowe, Collins and Voinovich stating beforehand they would support it? Now he can show us where he really stands on healthcare, card check, cap and tax and other critical matters coming up soon.
