Al Gore a lightning rod at Apple shareholder meeting

CUPERTINO, Calif.--The presence of one of the world's pre-eminent environmentalists at Apple's shareholder meeting Thursday was the subject of much of the morning's pointed discussion.

Gore was seated in the first row, along with his six fellow board members, in Apple's Town Hall auditorium as several stockholders took turns either bashing or praising his high-profile views on climate change.

A longtime Apple shareholder stood at the microphone and urged against Gore's re-election to the board. Gore "has become a laughingstock. The glaciers have not melted," Sheldon said, referring to Gore's views on global warming. "If his advice he gives to Apple is as faulty as his views on the environment then he doesn't need to be re-elected."

“Jobs also rejected the idea of giving stockowners more of that cash through dividends because, he said, he believed the stock price, currently at $201.60 a share, would be unaffected either way. He asked one shareholder, “Would you rather be a company with our same stock price and $40 billion in cash, or a company with the same stock price and no cash?”

That’s $40 per share. How about we split. You give us $20 per share and hold $20 billion is reserve?

“I use a mac because it works. Period. “

BETTER than an IBM clone

the fact someone would post such a cheeky question while clacking it out on a Microsoft product astounds me

Can you be a good conservative, standing up for conservative ideas and values, and still buy Apple products and support Gore, knowing they spend a portion of your money to further Liberal causes?

A "good conservative"? What groupthink consensus decides what a "good conservative" is? And who are you to pose a question demanding not only introspection, but self-judgement and then a report back for group consensus review? In the Chinese and Soviet prison camps, prisoners had write, and rewrite, their life histories until they "correctly" described them according to the politically correct interpretations of their lives. What camp review board do you aspire to?

I have a Mac, and I'm a conservative, and here's my answer to your question: Screw you.

“Unfortunately, there is not a reasonable competitor to Apple for the quality of products they produce.”

Sure there is. Their hardware is made by the same companies as everyone else in Taiwan and China.

. . . and there is absolutely no difference in the quality of any of those computers? Not in my belief. The difference is in the specs they build to - as well as in the operating system which is built in Cupertino, CA.

I don’t let Algore’s useless presence on a board affect how or what I purchase for my own work need. That’s why I own 2 macs & wish I owned more :)

Tech Ping.

I didn’t realize Al Gore was on the board for Apple. That really explains a lot.

Sure there are reasonable competitors. Yes apple has the simple to use dummy user experience down pat. But the new google phone shoudl compete quite nicely and even windows mobile (with some heavy mods) can actually be better than the iPhone.

For computers there’s really no comparison. PC is the way to go whether you go with windows or Linux.

And the iPad is easily beat by netbooks.

So while there is always give and take when changing vendors if it really bothered you enough...I’m sure you could find an alternative.

Now if you said their isn’t a viable alternative to Microsoft then you may have something because nearly everyone has to deal with them at work and they have been deemed a monopoly. But even that is changing now.

I guess the you could say you don’t like your cable company, but then there’s satelite TV. Well I guess you could say you don’t like your government...then you are stuck.

Ask Rush Limbaugh.

And: sure. The computer industry is left all around, now that Scott McNeely's left the building.

Believe what you wish. It’s the same Intel reference motherboard and panels - that and the OS is nothing special. It’s just NEXTstep, more or less. You are paying a premium for a perceived luxury good.

Simply because you would die if applied that standard to everything you need to work and live. Assholes exist in every walk of life and every endeavor; even in those that align with you politically.

I know there are some exceptions, but almost all Apple users I meet:

1. believe in man-made global warming.
2. vote Democrat
3. annoy the s*&t out of me.

You should get out more. I’m a huge Conservative and I couldn’t get by without Apple products. Don’t judge books by covers and all that.

"Has Gore ever run or worked for a business?"

Read or heard somewhere that Algore did take two science classes in College. Got a "C" in one and a "D" in the other.

I’d say his assessment is pretty much correct. And that’s not judging a book by it’s cover. That’s after reading the entire book just to find it had a few good pages in it.

But then again Rush likes apple. He is able to separate the products from the idiot users who use them. But then again Rush is clearly not a very tech savy person. I’m sure he likes to use technology and thinks he’s pretty good, but he really doesn’t have a clue and he is one of the “dumb” users that need apple to make things easy.
