Seriously though. When will we know if it produced a tsunami that the west coast needs to worry about?

I hope it didn’t cause too much damage or hurt too many people. Some of my best days in the Army were on Okinawa. When I was stationed a little further north on Okino Erabu Shima small quakes were a common occurrence.

Thats a big one. If that doesn’t produce a tsunami they need to reasses their theories.

I spent 18 months there myself in 67&68. Many quake tremors. The tiny island is actually the top of a mountain that rises up from the floor of the South China Sea.

I looked at the map and Tokyo, Shanghai, Taipei and N. Philippines looked susceptible but the early tsunami warnings seem pretty mild

Its a lovely morning here on the SW coast of Taiwan. No rise in tides or unusual wave action here.

Thats a big one. If that doesn’t produce a tsunami they need to reasses their theories.

It's not only the magnitude; it's the type of earthquake with the thrust-fault scenario usually being the most likely to produce a tsunami.

Stike-slip Fault

Normal Fault

Thrust Fault

The tsunami generating process is more complicated than a sudden push against the column of ocean water. The earthquake's magnitude and depth, water depth in the region of tsunami generation, the amount of vertical motion of the sea floor, the velocity of such motion, whether there is coincident slumping of sediments and the efficiency with which energy is transferred from the earth's crust to ocean water are all part of the generation mechanism. What Causes Tsunamis?

Surf’s Up in Pusan?

I lived in the village of Ameiku when I was 11. It was perched high on a cliff overlooking the ocean. I don't think we lived more than 50 yards from the drop-off.

Glad I'm not living there now.

Mine too, although I was only an Army Brat 1st Class. '63 to '66. One of the best darn places an adventurous kid could hope to live.

Look at what the difference will be in a 7.0 in Japan vs a 7.0 in Haiti. A county that takes responsibility for themselves may or may not need help but won’t be the disaster that a resolutely corrupt government was.
