Others, like Representative Jason Altmire, a Pennsylvania Democrat who also voted against the House bill, seem to wonder aloud why Mr. Obama is bothering. With so many Democrats feeling nervous about their past votes in favor of the health bill, Mr. Altmire said, he can imagine vote-switching in only one direction: from yes to no.
“I don’t know of any no votes at this point that would switch unless the bill is substantially changed, including me,” he said. “And I know of a handful of ‘yes’ votes who regret it and would relish the opportunity to put a ‘no’ vote on the board so they could go back home and talk about that.”
Analysts like Mr. Wasserman say Ms. Pelosi’s best chances for no-to-yes conversions rest with Democrats who are retiring, because they do not have to worry about their political fortunes in the fall. So far, there are only three: Representative John Tanner and Representative Bart Gordon, both of Tennessee, and Representative Brian Baird of Washington.
Mr. Gordon said his constituents are starting to get a little bit tired” of hearing about health care. He said he wanted to see “at least a partially bipartisan bill” — something that now seems impossible in the House, given that the lone Republican who voted in favor last time, Representative Anh Cao of Louisiana, has publicly changed his mind.

The Dems have way over 50%, unfortunately. She wants a landslide victory of over 60%, not a bare victory.
If she had a majority, Pelosi would have had the Senate bill passed by now. She is about 10-15 votes short right now.

Not only will Republicans offer amendments until the cows come home - amendments that must be voted on, but if you succeed, you’ll get your asses handed to you in November, watch your president get the boot in 2012, and finally watch the SCOTUS invalidate this legislation. The solution for Barack Obama is simple.
He must immediately schedule another Healthcare Speech in prime-time and demand that all of the television networks cancel their regular programming. He can also tell Pelosi and Reid that it will be given in front of Congress, like the State of the Union Address. Members of the Supreme Court would be required to attend, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Ambassadors, would all have to attend.
Do you think that would get him over the hump?

I can not wait for the SCOTUS to get a chance to rule on an Obama pet project. He left them in a relly good mood after the state of union.
Are you insane? Pelosi would hold the vote tomorrow if she had enough people on board. The House passed their version BEFORE the Senate. Since Pelosi twisted enough arms to get the votes, the entire healthc care debate has turned 180 degrees. Tea parties, Town Hall meetings, tied up Congressional phone lines. The reason a lot of Dems voted for Pelosi was they feared her wrath. That fear has now been replaced by the terror they feel about what the voters will do if they change their no vote to yes/.
Murtha dead, Wexler gone, Cao now a no, and the Dem from Hawaii retired yesterday to run for Gov. That means she is one short, even before the Stupak 40 who will never vote for the Senate version even if Pelosi/Reid promise to reconcile it.
The HOuse will kill the bill, mark my words.
Zeroing out abortion funding in strong language is going to be on that list for a lot of the House Dems. Will the Senate accept that change? I doubt it. Can you implement that change via the reconciliation process? I doubt it.
And are there other changes that the House wants that the Senate doesn't and might not be implementable in any case? You betcha.
And note the comment in the article: a lot of the YES vote Dems would like a second chance to vote NO and take that home to their constituents. Well Nancy is not going to be that kind. A vote that failed would be a slap in the face of Obama. Nice little Nancy would never do that.

Hope you’re right, but wouldn’t be so sure. If Pelosi can get a majority, they’ll ram it through reconciliation. They’d rather lose the election because after passage we all (Repubs included) will be playing THEIR field just as we have been for decades on their other Ponzi schemes—Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. The Republican & conservative winners in Oct. must do all the heavy lifting—cutting spending (including Soc. Sec., Medicare, etc.) and raising or revising taxes—none of which will be popular. The only saving grace is that the electorate is beginning to see national bankruptcy on the horizon and may realize the country has to get serious about cutting spending and retiring debt.
