Big quake question: Is nature out of control?
MSNBC ^ | February 27, 2010 | Livescience.com via MSNBC

Chile is on a hotspot of sorts for earthquake activity. And so the 8.8-magnitude temblor that shook the region overnight was not a surprise, historically speaking. Nor was it outside the realm of normal, scientists say, even though it comes on the heels of other major earthquakes.

One scientist, however, says that relative to the time period from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s, Earth has been more active over the past 15 years or so.

The Chilean earthquake, and the tsunami it spawned, originated on a hot spot known as a subduction zone, where one plate of Earth's crust dives under another. It's part of the active "Ring of Fire," a zone of major crustal plate clashes that surround the Pacific Ocean.

“Out of control?” That’s the dumbest question I’ve heard this month! When was nature “in control?”

I’m waiting for some nitwit to suggest that this is Mother Gaia punishing Chile for electing a conservative president.

Whose control? It’s sure not out of God’s control.

Tim Pawlenty: "...God's in charge. God is in charge...

Sarah Palin: "...America's spirit to rise again by not being afraid to kind of go back to some of our roots as a God fearing nation..."

That sums it all up quite aptly.

I read recently that there are three times when
earthquakes are most likely...

Moon rides high on celestial equator (begins the most likely 5 day period of earthquakes in the northern hemisphere).

Moon runs low on celestial equator (begins the most likely 5 day period of earthquakes in the southern hemisphere).

Two days a month, the Moon is on the celestial equator - the most likely time for an earthquake in either hemisphere.

The next day where the Moon is on the celestial equator is March 1...

I found this interesting.

Yes, but wouldn’t it be fun to toss a maiden into a volcano just for the heck of it?

I live in southern California.

Yeah. it’s very big quake, where big quakes have happened before.

My point is, this is not the end of days or Mayan doomsday.

All we can do, is build things better.

It will happen again and again and again over and over and over.
