CNN: Liberals and Atheists Have Higher IQs
NewsBusters ^ | 02/28/2010 | Noel Sheppard

"Political, religious and sexual behaviors may be reflections of intelligence, a new study finds."

So began an article published at CNN.com Friday guaranteed to anger conservatives from coast to coast.

The piece continued, "Evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa at the the London School of Economics and Political Science correlated data on these behaviors with IQ from a large national U.S. sample and found that, on average, people who identified as liberal and atheist had higher IQs."

Folks are warned about proceeding further, for the content might be really offensive to some (h/tips to NB readers Stan and Chesley):

“Ann Coulter...drop 35 nuclear bombs throughout the Middle East...war over...without a single American life lost.”

Except for the tens of thousands of Americans who were in those countries at the time. And given that Pakistan and India might have gotten spooked and started bombing each other with their 100 or so nuclear bombs, more Americans killed there, and then thousands who would have died a slow death from the lingering effects of radiation wafted across the Pacific, and social dislocation, riots, etc. when around half of our oil supply was suddenly cut off.

People with simplistic solutions to big problems are good at thinking up ways to get a lot of people dead.

"So they consider 106 to be a high IQ?"

Hmmm, 106?

I've got dead realtives who would presently score higher than that on an IQ test.

“Some of the dumbest people...had ‘high IQs”.

One of my sons was dyslexic and eventually dropped out of high school. He was depressed, but I told him not to worry because he was one of the socially smartest people I have ever known. When he was 13 there were about 5 girls calling for him constantly. I asked, “Are you dating all those girls?” “Oh no,” he said, “I am just dating one or two, I just keep the others handy in case the first two don’t work out.” I would tell him, find what you like, do it well, and hire someone who can read. Twenty years later, he is happily married with kids, a home, and a job where he supervises several people in the building trades. And, No, his phase of the trade is not suffering.

“A Dam cockroach learns to move or get stepped on.”

No, a cockroach that is stepped on learns nothing, it is dead. A cockroach that runs from movement or vibration avoids being stepped on and passes on the flight response to its offspring.

Which is more than a liberal passes on to the litter.

That being said, many blacks and hispanics self-identify as “conservative.”

True story.

Back in the late 60s, I went to a rock concert with one of my "really smart" friends. During "Light My Fire", Jim Morrison was throwing lit "sparklers" into the audience. When one of them came our way, I ducked. My "really smart" friend grabbed it for a souvenir. Ouch! Later on, he was telling me how those "sparklers" burn at "about 1200 degrees F." I told him that I didn't know that. LOL!

Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said.

Complete idiocy.

Social organization is so vital for humans--the total helplessness of human children for several years underscores this. Nothing gives social organization a purpose as much as a transcending idea. And, I would argue, the only real transcending ideas are religious ones.

A very misleading article.

Richard Fernandez reported in his February 27th article on this topic “Close encounters of the far left kind” that the group studied were adolescents.....

From the Fernandez article:

Time’s John Cloud quotes a London School of Economics paper which says there’s evidence that “very liberal” adolescents have an average IQ of 106 and “very conservative” kids come in at only 95.

A very different sample than was implied in the Newsbusters story.

As Winston Churchill said,

“If a man is not liberal at twenty, he has no heart, but if a man is not a conservative at forty, he has no brains”

To be snickered at......

My "discussions" with liberals who project their arrogant, elitist attitudes is by asking this question:

"If liberals/socialists are so smart, why do they choose a lifestyle philosophy that has ALWAYS failed, ALWAYS enslaves its' people and was responsible for upwards of 200 million deaths in the 20th century?"

It would appear logical anyone choosing to be a liberal/socialist is either extraordinarily stupid or simply pure evil.

The survey was based on "National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health." Following the links to its site from the CNN piece revealed their study design didn't include home schooled students, just high school students (71 public, 3 catholic and 6 other private HS in their final sample) and a set of schools feeding those HS. It is possible that a sample of home schooled children would differ on their characteristics relative to liberal vs. conservative, religious vs. atheist and IQ status. I don't know whether that sampling error is sufficient to effect or even invalidate their conclusions. The CNN piece also claimed to analyze data from General Social Survey. It appears to have used home based sampling so might have been able to redress this. Only the abstract of the actual study to which CNN was referring is available for free online so I couldn't investigate further.

Thanks for posting. These “studies” always have predictable results.
