famously declared he was in charge after the president was shot,

He said "As for now, I’m in control here, in the White House, pending the return of the vice president and in close touch with him. If something came up, I would check with him, of course.”

I have to say I am having trouble disagreeing with most of these statements.

It really says something that Bush 41 wouldn't even make the Mount Rushmore of terrible 20th Century Presidents.

who as Ronald Reagan's secretary of state famously declared he was in charge after the president was shot,

I have no water to carry for Al Haig, but I heard that comment of his on the news at the time. I never thought he meant he was the successor to the president. I always thought he was simply letting people know, AN AN GOOD MILITARY OFFICER WOULD, that the post wasn't abandoned, but that a responsible person was there as OIC.

it seems he was a bit of an egomaniac. then again, it seems all of his comments in this interview are spot on.

all freepers should read the whole interview. this is one guy who understood the entire soviet union and communism. he never flinched.

General Haig participated in seven Korean campaigns, including the Battle of Inchon, the Battle of Chosin Reservoir and the Evacuation of Hungnam.

He earned the Silver Star for heroism and a Bronze Star with Valor Device.

As a battlefield Lieutenant Colonel, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's 2nd highest medal, for heroism (fighting in hand-to-hand combat in human-wave assaults).

He was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.

He is a true hero in the American pantheon of heroes.

The pansy media hated him. The pansy media-types hate war, Republicans and the military. A genuine hero is anathema to them.

General Haig died on February 20. I expect his deconstruction by the media to begin any time now that he's in a resting place for America's bravest.

Biggest mistake Ronald Reagan made was choosing 41 as his veep, Total RINO. All the idiot had to do was follow Reagans lead.

We can thank Powell for the failure to depose Saddam in 1991.

Powell is the most overrated person ever to hold a position of high public trust in the US Government.

spared no criticism for Reagan, who he said left the running of government to his chief of staff, deputy chief of staff, CIA director and wife

I liked Haig but this is a cheap shop. Presidents leave the implementation of their programs to their staff. Nancy Reagan is a decent lady but was a little protective of the President and just alittle flakey.

Lost me right here. Al NEVER claimed he was in charge.

What he did say was:

“I am in charge here at the White House.”

A solid reassuring statement that I would expect any field grade military officer to make.

“It’s OK I have it covered here people.”

Nothing wrong with that.

I have started to draw this lesson from all I have read over the years about Al Haig.

To have right ideas does not, alone and by itself, always make one right for the job - either the job we chose or the job we are given.

It is almost of equal or greater importance to find our true calling in life; and our “temperament” may have a role in that. We can still have great and good ideas about many other things.
