~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas

Little Rock Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located approximately 17 miles northeast of Little Rock, Arkansas.

The host unit at Little Rock AFB is the 19th Airlift Wing (19 AW), assigned to the Air Mobility Command 21st Expeditionary Mobility Task Force. The wing provides the Department of Defense the largest C-130 Hercules transport fleet in the world, supplying humanitarian airlift relief to victims of disasters, to airdropping supplies and troops into the heart of contingency operations in hostile areas.

In late 1951, after learning of the Air Force’s desire for a new base in the central United States, local leaders sent a letter to the Secretary of the Air Force urging serious consideration of the Little Rock area. The Air Force was warm to the idea, but Congress would not allocate funds to purchase the needed property. In an ambitious move, the local leaders convinced Pentagon officials that funds would be raised locally, then the land would be purchased and donated to the Air Force. In January 1952, the Air Force agreed to the proposal, and local citizens went to work.

The fund-raising effort was immense, but by the end of September 1952, the Pulaski County Citizens Council (forerunner of today's Air Base Community Council) had collected almost a million dollars, and the Air Base Committee began buying property from more than 150 private landowners near Jacksonville. That same month, the Air Force announced it would build a $31 million jet bomber base on the site. The fund raising and purchase process took nearly 18 months, but the land needed most urgently was purchased first, and construction began on 8 December 1953.

Little Rock AFB is the only C-130 training base for the Department of Defense, training C-130 pilots, navigators, flight engineers, and loadmasters from all branches of the US military as well as 28 allied nations, in tactical airlift and aerial delivery. It is home to C-130E, C-130H and C-130J aircraft, as well as the C-130 Center of Excellence (i.e., schools for C-130E/H and C-130J crews).

The base is populated by over 6,000 military personnel and another 2,000 civilians. The 19th Airlift Wing (19 AW) of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) is the host wing, having assumed that role from the 314th Airlift Wing (314 AW) of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC) on October 1, 2008.

With the assumption of operational control by the 19 AW and AMC, the 314 AW became a tenant unit. Other organizations at Little Rock AFB include AMC's 19th Airlift Group, the 189th Airlift Wing of the Arkansas Air National Guard, and the U.S. Air Force Mobility Weapons School. All four of these organizations fly the C-130 Hercules.

The host unit at Little Rock AFB is the 314th Airlift Wing. The 314th AW is responsible for airlifting supplies and people throughout the world and provides a major part of the "Global Power" leg of the Air Force's promise: Global Reach - Global Power for America. With a dual mission, worldwide aerial delivery and C-130 aircrew training, the wing organizes, equips and trains combat-ready airlift units to operate anywhere in the world.

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

March 2, 2010
God Is Here
[The Lord] heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. —Psalm 147:3

Leslie and her two daughters were about to be evicted from their home. Although Leslie believed that God could help, so far He hadn’t given a clue as to how. She wondered, Where is God? As she drove to the courthouse, she prayed for God’s intervention. Then she heard a song on the radio proclaiming, “God is here! Let the brokenhearted rejoice.” Could this be the assurance from God that she was longing to hear?

Inside the courtroom, Leslie stood before the judge, heard his decision, and signed the legal documents, but still God had not given her an answer.

As Leslie was walking to her car, a truck pulled up beside her. “Ma’am,” said the driver, “I heard your testimony inside the courtroom, and I believe God wants me to help you.” And he did. Gary helped Leslie get in contact with a woman from a local church who was able to work with the parties involved to reverse the process so that she and her girls could stay in their home.

When people ask, “Where is God?” the answer is, “Right here.” One way God is at work is through Christians like Gary who are continuing the work Jesus started—healing the brokenhearted and binding up their wounds (Ps. 147:3).

God is here; He stands beside you.
God is here; He wants to guide you.
God is here and He will help you,
So do not fear—Your God is near. —D. De Haan

When we love God, we will serve people.
